Matsuida-shuku
was the sixteenth of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō. It is located in the present-day city of Annaka, Gunma Prefecture, Japan, at the foot of Mount Myōgi. Travel towards Kyoto Usuinoseki Checkpoint was one of the four major checkpoints along the Nakasendō and was between Matsuida-shuku and Sakamoto-shuku. Sakamoto-shuku
was the seventeenth of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō. It is located in the present-day city of Annaka, Gunma Prefecture, Japan. History Sakamoto-shuku is located at the eastern entrance to the Usui Pass. During the Edo period, there were a total of four ''honjin'' and sub-''honjin'' combined. There were an additional 40 other buildings for travelers to use, making it a comparatively large station along the Nakasendō. Oiwake-shuku
was the twentieth of the sixty-nine stations of the Nakasendō. It is located in the present-day town of Karuizawa, in the Kitasaku District of Nagano Prefecture, Japan. History This post town was named ''Oiwake'', which means "where two roads split," because it was at this point that the Nakasendō split from the Hokkoku Kaidō. In the late 17th century, during the Genroku period, it flourished as a post town that could hold over 200 guests. There are still many remnants from the Edo period in the town today. Though not a neighboring post town, Matsuida-shuku also provides a direct connection to Oiwake-shuku along the Nakasendō, by way of a minor ''hime kaidō''. Mount Myōgi
is one of the major mountains in Gunma Prefecture, Japan. Its straddles the border between the municipalities of Annaka, Shimonita and Tomioka. Well known for its rocks weathered into fantastic forms, this famous peak is ranked among Japan's three most noted places of rugged beauty. There are many hiking courses, and when the foliage changes color there are splendid views to be seen. The highest point is the peak of the Mt. Sōmadake (相馬岳) reaching .It is also a National Place of Scenic Beauty as determined by the Agency for Cultural Affairs in Japan in 1923. Hime Kaidō
was the name given to minor routes that created detours around the difficult crossings (or river crossings) of main routes during the Edo period in Japan. These routes could be found on many of the Edo Five Routes, as well as on other sub-routes that crossed the country. Naming When there were difficult passes or river crossings on the main routes, ''hime kaidō'' were established to avoid them. Because there were fewer travelers, less danger, a lower chance of an attack by bandits (compared with the main route they were avoiding), it was said that people could relax while traveling the route. It was for these reasons that women often chose to travel these routes, giving rise to the routes being called ''hime kaidō'' or ''onna kaidō'' ("women's route"). There were different definitions of what made a ''hime kaidō'', as some detours just went around one difficult area, while others were much longer and avoided most of the dangerous routes.
