Mats Nilsson (Swedish Air Force Officer)
Lieutenant General Mats Evald Nilsson (born 30 December 1956) is a Swedish Air Force officer. He served as Inspector General of the Air Force from 2000 to 2002, as head of the Joint Forces Directorate from 2002 to 2007 and as Chief of Defence Staff in 2007. Nilsson is currently serving as the First Marshal of the Court since 2012. Early life Nilsson was born in Västerås, Sweden and grew up in Lomma, Scania, having moved there with his parents when he was three years old. Nilsson started gliding when he was 15-year-old. Nilsson was also a talented high school student, and as such also an exchange student in the United States. At this time he was thinking of becoming a pediatrician or a chef. Conscription In Sweden
Sweden has had mandatory military service ( sv, värnplikt) for men since 1901, replacing the previous allotment system that had been in use since the 17th century, although peacetime conscription was deactivated between 2010 and 2017. When peacetime conscription was mothballed in 2010, the law on conscription was simultaneously made gender-neutral. In 2017, the Swedish government decided to reactivate military conscription, referencing increased threats to national security. Beginning in 2018, over 4,000 women and men were called up for service. The conscripts were chosen from a pool of approximately 13,000 young people born in 1999 to serve for 12 months. The Swedish Armed Forces reportedly planned to call 4,000 recruits annually for basic military training in 2018 and 2019. Malmen Airbase
Malmen Airbase ( sv, Malmens flygplats) is a military airbase located in Malmslätt, Linköping Municipality, Östergötland County, Sweden. It is located west of Linköping. The base was opened by Carl Cederström in 1912. In the beginning the airbase had only three aircraft but more were bought in the same year. From 1926 to 1974 it served as an air force base for the Östgöta Wing (F 3). In 1974 the Wing was decommissioned, and the airbase was put under Bråvalla Wing (F 13) then later Uppland Wing (F 16). From 1998 it served as main base for the Swedish Armed Forces helicopter units, with the Swedish Armed Forces Helicopter Wing. From 2003 the Royal Swedish Airschool has been located here, to train pilots with Sk 60 jet trainers. The Swedish Air Force Museum is located on the airbase. Blekinge Wing
Blekinge Wing ( sv, Blekinge flygflottilj), also F 17 Kallinge, or simply F 17, is a Swedish Air Force wing with the main base located near Ronneby in southern Sweden. It is one of the three remaining wings in Sweden and currently has two squadrons of multirole aircraft. F 17 in the south and F 21 in the north are the two wings remaining to have operational squadrons. F 7 is a school where pilots begin their training in the JAS 39 Gripen.
