The Australia women's national soccer team is overseen by the governing body for soccer in Australia, Football Australia, which is currently a member of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and the regional ASEAN Football Federation (AFF) since leaving the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) in 2006. The team's official nickname is "the Matildas" (from the Australian folk song Waltzing Matilda), having been known as the "Female Socceroos" before 1995. Samantha May Kerr (born 10 September 1993) is an Australian professional football player who plays as a forward for Chelsea in the FA Women's Super League and the Australia women's national team (the ''Matildas''), which she has captained since 2019. As of 2022, Kerr is the all-time leading Australian international scorer, and is the all-time leading scorer in the National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) in the United States. Clare Elizabeth Polkinghorne (born 1 February 1989) is an Australian professional soccer player who plays as a defender for Swedish Damallsvenskan club Vittsjö GIK and the Australia women's national team. Career For the 2014 season, Polkinghorne was loaned to INAC Kobe Leonessa in Japan. She signed for Portland Thorns of the National Women's Soccer League after the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup. Although the first governing body of the sport was founded in 1911, Football Australia in its current form was only established in 1961 as the Australian Soccer Federation. The 1994 OFC Women's Championship was the fifth edition of the OFC Women's Championship. Papua New Guinea hosted the tournament between 14 and 20 October 1994. Cheryl Salisbury
Cheryl Ann Salisbury (born 8 March 1974) is a former association football player who represented Australia internationally as a defender from 1994 until 2009, winning 151 caps. Biography She most recently played as a defender for the New York Power in the WUSA and for the Newcastle United Jets in the W-League. She went on to become coach of the Broadmeadow Magic team in the Northern NSW Herald Women's Premier League competition. Salisbury was captain of the Australian female national team, the Matildas. 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup
The 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup was the seventh FIFA Women's World Cup, the quadrennial international soccer championship contested by the women's national teams of the member associations of FIFA. The tournament was hosted by Canada for the first time and by a North American country for the third time. Matches were played in six cities across Canada in five time zones. Tony Gustavsson (born 14 August 1973) is a Swedish professional football manager and former player who works as head coach of the Australia women's national team. He is best known for his managerial success in women's football, leading Tyresö FF to the 2014 UEFA Women's Champions League Final and helping the United States women's national soccer team to two world championships in 2015 and 2019 as an assistant. The 2010 AFC Women's Asian Cup was held from 19–30 May at the Chengdu Sports Centre in China PR. "Waltzing Matilda" is a song developed in the Australian style of poetry and folk music called a bush ballad. It has been described as the country's "unofficial national anthem".
