Mathias Stoltenberg
Mathias Stoltenberg (21 July 1799 – 2 November 1871) was a Norwegian painter. He earned his living mostly as a travelling portrait painter and furniture restorer. His paintings were later rediscovered and presented at the 1914 Jubilee Exhibition in Kristiania. Personal life Stoltenberg was born in Tønsberg, the son of merchant and politician Carl Peter Stoltenberg and Karen Mathea Bull. He lost his sense of hearing as a child, and died in poverty in Vang in 1871. Career Stoltenberg studied carpentry in Copenhagen, where he also took lessons in portrait painting with Christian August Lorentzen. Back in Norway he earned his living as a travelling portrait painter and carpenter. After his father died in 1830, the family home in Tønsberg dissolved. Stoltenberg's travels covered large parts of Norway. Tønsberg
Tønsberg , historically Tunsberg, is a city and municipality in Vestfold og Telemark county, eastern Norway, located around south-southwest of Oslo on the western coast of the Oslofjord near its mouth onto the Skagerrak. The administrative centre of the municipality is the city of Tønsberg. The city is the most populous metropolis in the district of Vestfold with a population of 52,419 in 2019. Østerdalen
Østerdalen () is a valley and traditional district in Innlandet county, in Eastern Norway. This area typically is described as the large GlÃ¥ma river valley as well as all its tributary valleys. It includes the municipalities Rendalen, Alvdal, Folldal, Tynset, Tolga and Os in the north, Elverum, Stor-Elvdal, Engerdal, Trysil and Ã…mot in the south. Henrik Grevenor
Henrik Grevenor (27 May 1896 – 3 September 1937) was a Norwegian art history, art historian. Biography Henrik Gustav Rønneberg Grevenor was born in Stavanger; the son of Gustav Andreas Michaelsen and Karin Rønneberg. In 1916 he became an assistant at the Antiquities Collection at the University of Oslo, promoted to amanuensis in 1918. From 1917 he was also at the University's ethnographic museum. He was also a lecturer at the University of Oslo on the subject of art history. From 1928 he was deputy manager at the Norwegian Museum of Decorative Arts and Design. His thesis from 1928, ''Norsk malerkunst under renessanse og barokk 1550–1700'', is regarded a fundamental work in the history of Norwegian art. Peder Balke
Peder Balke (November 4, 1804 – February 5, 1887) was a Norwegian painter. He is known for portraying the landscape of Norway in a romantic and dramatic manner. Biography Peder Andersen was born on the island of Helgøya, in Hedmark county, Norway. He was the son of Anders Thoresen and Pernille Pedersdatter. He grew up in Ringsaker, but lived in the 1820s on the Balke farm in Toten in Oppland county. Farmers in Toten paid for his education, and he decorated several farms in Toten in return. They actively encouraged his painting activities and later supported him in obtaining higher education. In the autumn of 1827, Balke served as an apprentice to engraver and painter Heinrich August Grosch (1763–1843). He was also a student at the Tegneskole under Grosch and Jacob Munch. Johannes Flintoe
Johannes Flintoe (1786/87, Copenhagen - 27 January 1870, Copenhagen) was a Danish-born painter of Norwegian ancestry. He is known for his landscapes, costume studies and historical scenes. His works play a significant role in the transition to romantic nationalism. Biography His family (originally "Flinthoug") came from Hurum and his father was a metal caster. At the age of thirteen, he was apprenticed to a master decorative painter named Pader Faxøe, who became his foster father. In 1802, he began studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, which he completed in 1805. During this time, he also took private lessons in decorative and theatrical painting. Lars Hertervig
Lars Hertervig (16 February 1830 – 6 January 1902) was a Norwegian painter. His semi-fantastical work with motives from the coastal landscape in the traditional district of Ryfylke is regarded as one of the peaks of Norwegian painting. Life and career Lars Hertervig was born in 1830 at Borgøy, in the municipality Tysvær in Norway, on the west coast of Norway, north of Stavanger. His family were poor, Quaker farmers. Hertervig studied painting at the Arts Academy of Düsseldorf from 1852, as the private pupil of Hans Gude. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. Hans Ødegaard (30 May 1876 – 1 March 1943) was a Norwegian painter. Biography He was born in Norderhov. He studied painting and drawing with Brynjulf Bergslien. He was a student of Fredrik Kolstø the year 1897-1898 and Knud Bergslien the year 1898–1899. Later in Copenhagen under Peder Severin Krøyer in the year 1899–1900. He was a student of Kristian Zahrtmann at Copenhagen in February 1900. He trained under Johan Nordhagen from 1900 to 1905 and was a pupil of Erik Werenskiold from 1902 to 1903.
