The Mater Private Hospital ( ga, Ospidéal Príobháideach an Mater) is a private hospital business. Its main hospital is located just to the east of the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital in Dublin, Ireland. In addition to the main hospital in Dublin, the business has a hospital in Cork, cancer treatment centres in Limerick and Liverpool and various out-patient clinics. History The Mater Private Hospital in Dublin was built on the site of No 7 Eccles Street, the home of the main character (Leopold Bloom) in James Joyce's ''Ulysses.'' In Joyce's youth, No 7 Eccles Street was the actual home of his contemporary, JF Byrne. Its founders included Sister Gemma Byrne who became the first chief executive after the Dublin hospital's opening in May 1986. The Mater Misericordiae University Hospital ( ga, Ospidéal an Mater Misercordiae), commonly known as the Mater ( "matter"), is a major teaching hospital, based at Eccles Street, Phibsborough, on the northside of Dublin, Ireland. 7 Eccles Street was a row house in Dublin, Ireland. It was the home of Leopold Bloom, protagonist of the novel ''Ulysses'' (1922) by James Joyce. The house was demolished in 1967, and the site is now occupied by the Mater Private Hospital. History In 1769 Isaac Ambrose Eccles leased a parcel of land on the north side of Eccles Street to Daniel Goodwin, carpenter. This became the site of numbers 6–8 Eccles Street.
