Matatū
Matatū is a New Zealand women's professional rugby union team that competes in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. Matatū represents the South Island, specifically the regions covered by the Crusaders and the Highlanders. They are governed by the Crusaders. They were crowned champions of the 2023 Super Rugby Aupiki season. History Name, logo and colours The team’s name, logo and colours were officially unveiled on 12 October 2021. The name, logo and colours were created by a local artist and designer Morgan Mathews-Hale in partnership with Te Whaka Ako Limited. Matatū is a name gifted by Ngāi Tūāhuriri, which is one of five primary hapū of the Ngai Tahu iwi. The name Matatū, literally meaning "alert or vigilant", has been gifted to symbolise the teams tūmanawa (determined sacrifice), tūaho (legacy), tūhono (connections) and tūtira (unity) in representing Te Waka o Aoraki (the South Island). 2023 Super Rugby Aupiki Season
The 2023 Super Rugby Aupiki season was the second season of Super Rugby Aupiki (known as Sky Super Rugby Aupiki for sponsorship reasons), a professional women's rugby union club competition organised by New Zealand Rugby. The competition ran from 25 February 2023when Hurricanes Poua and Chiefs Manawa played the opening match in Levinto 25 March 2023. The tournament was won by Matatū, who defeated Chiefs Manawa 33–31 in the final in Hamilton, earning them their first Super Rugby Aupiki title. That match also resulted in the Chiefs Manawa's first-ever loss in the two-year-old competition. Competition format The competition featured four teams, who each played three regular season matches and two play-off matches. A total of ten matches were played over five weeks. Alana Bremner
Alana Bremner (born 10 February 1997) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She plays for Matatū in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition and for Canterbury provincially. She also represents New Zealand internationally and was a member of their 2021 Rugby World Cup champion squad. Rugby career 2020 Bremner had a breakthrough season in 2020, she led her side to their fourth consecutive Farah Palmer Cup title and was the leading try scorer for the season with eight tries. Bremner was the first woman to play 50 matches for Lincoln University, and earned 50 caps for Canterbury. She played three matches for the New Zealand Development side at the 2019 Oceania Rugby Women's Championship in Fiji. 2024 Super Rugby Aupiki Season
The 2024 Super Rugby Aupiki season will be the third season of Super Rugby Aupiki. The competition is expected to run from 2 March 2024 to 13 April 2024. Chiefs Manawa and Hurricanes Poua will kick off the season at the FMG Stadium Waikato in Hamilton. Competition format The competition will begin with a four-week pre-season that will feature two matches. The season is then expected to officially start on 2 March with six weeks of round robin matches before the final is contested between the top two teams. There will be a mix of standalone fixtures and double-headers with their Super Rugby Pacific counterparts. Phillipa Love
Phillipa Love (born 8 April 1990) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She plays for the Black Ferns internationally and was a member of their 2021 Rugby World Cup champion squad. She also plays for Matatū in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition and represents Canterbury provincially. Rugby career 2014–2016 Love made her debut for New Zealand against Canada on 14 June 2014 at Whakatāne. She was overlooked altogether in 2015. Georgia Ponsonby (born 14 December 1999) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She represents New Zealand internationally and was a member of their 2021 Rugby World Cup champion squad. She also plays for Matatū in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition and represents Canterbury provincially. Rugby career Ponsonby attended Feilding High School. She made her debut for Manawatu in the Farah Palmer Cup in 2017. She received a scholarship and went to Lincoln University in Canterbury. She played two seasons for Canterbury at Number 8 before switching to Hooker in 2020. 2021 Ponsonby was selected for the Black Ferns tour of England and France, but only played in the two test matches against France. Amy Rule (born 15 July 2000) is a New Zealand rugby union player. She plays for the Black Ferns internationally and was a member of their 2021 Rugby World Cup champion squad. The Chiefs Manawa (officially called the Waitomo Chiefs Manawa for sponsorship reasons) are a New Zealand women's professional rugby union team based in Hamilton, New Zealand that competes in the Super Rugby Aupiki competition. Super Rugby Aupiki is a professional women's rugby union club competition in New Zealand. Its inaugural season was held in March 2022. It is a steppingstone between the Farah Palmer Cup and the Black Ferns. Aupiki translates as ‘''the ascent to the upper most realm''’. Format Initially the four teams were supposed to have three regular season matches with one home and away game, and one Super Round fixture. The top two teams at the end of the three rounds would contest the final. However, the competition was reformatted as a round robin fixture because of the impact of COVID-19. Marcelle Parkes (born 9 September 1997) is a New Zealand rugby union player. History Team name On 7 February 2022, The Hurricanes revealed the new name of their women’s team – Hurricanes Poua.
