Matanzas (Cuban League)
Matanzas was a Cuban baseball team in the Cuban League based in Matanzas. They first played in the league's inaugural season of 1878, then played in the league from 1888 to 1890, 1892–1894, and in 1907–1908. Franchise history In the 1878 season, Matanzas finished in last place between Almendares (baseball), Almendares and Habana (baseball club), Habana with a 0–3 record. During a game on January 26, 1879, the club lost to Habana 36–26, with the 60 total runs the most combined runs by both teams in league history. Matanzas returned to the league for 1888, finishing in third place behind Club Fé and Habana with a 4–11 record. The following year the ended the season with a record 6-14, finishing in fourth place behind Habana, Fé and Cárdenas (baseball), Cárdenas. Román Calzadilla, a future member of the Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame, would begin his career with Matanzas in 1889. Cocodrilos de Matanzas (English: Matanzas Crocodiles) are a baseball team in the Cuban National Series. Victor Joseph "Biff" Schlitzer (December 4, 1884 – January 4, 1948) was a pitcher in Major League Baseball who played from through for the Philadelphia Athletics (1908–09) and Boston Red Sox (1909) of the American League, and with the Buffalo Buffeds of the Federal League (1914). Listed at , , Schlitzer batted and threw right-handed. A native of Rochester, New York, he attended University of Dayton. In a three-season career, Schlitzer posted a 10–15 record with 87 strikeouts and a 3.60 earned run average in 44 appearances, including 29 starts, 16 complete games, two shutouts, one save, and innings of work. Schlitzer died on January 4, 1948, at the age of 63 in Wellesley, Massachusetts. George McQuillan
George Watt McQuillan (May 1, 1885 – March 30, 1940) was an American professional baseball pitcher. He played in Major League Baseball from 1907 to 1918 for the Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, Pittsburgh Pirates and Cleveland Indians. In 1907 he set one of the longest-lived records in major league history when he pitched 25 innings before giving up the first earned run of his career.
