Masterswitch
Masterswitch was an English rock band active in the late 1970s. Band members The band consisted of four members: *Jimmy Edwards (vocals, guitar) *Stephen Wilkin (guitar) *Mark Steed (bass guitar) *Martin Lee (drums) Formation (1976) Lifelong friends Ray Simone and Martin Lee, together with Dave Sumeray (who was the bass player with Simone and Lee in a band called Woodfog) placed an advert in ''Melody Maker'' in an attempt to recruit bandmates at an open audition. Jimmy Edwards (musician)
James Arthur Edwards (18 April 1949 – 13 January 2015) was a lead singer and songwriter who led many bands from the 1960s until his death. He was most well known as lead singer of 1980s new wave band Time UK with Rick Buckler of The Jam, Danny Kustow of Tom Robinson Band, Martin Gordon (bassist in Sparks, who was then replaced by Nick South of Yoko Ono Band, Sniff 'n' the Tears and Steve Marriott's All Stars) and Ray Simone. The latter was also in Edwards's late seventies punk new wave band, Masterswitch. Early life and ancestry Edwards was born in 1949 in Chiswick, England, and grew up in Kensal Rise to age 11, after which the family moved to Ashford, Middlesex. His maternal grandmother was Russian and lived in Berlin in the 1920s. Edwards' mother was born around 1912 and might, according to Edwards, have been born out of wedlock. Time UK (band)
Time UK was a mid-1980s English rock band with Rick Buckler, the former drummer with The Jam. The group released three singles. Personnel *Rick Buckler - drums *Jimmy Edwards - vocals *Danny Kustow - guitar, vocals *Ray Simone - guitar, vocals *Nick South - bass guitar, vocals *Fletcher Christian (on second and third singles) Career On 30 October 1982, The Jam issued a handwritten statement announcing their split. A final single, "Beat Surrender", went straight to number one and a farewell tour culminated in a gig at the Brighton Centre on 11 December 1982. After that, the three band members went their separate ways. The Jam
The Jam were an English mod revival/ punk rock band formed in 1972 at Sheerwater Secondary School in Woking, Surrey. They released 18 consecutive Top 40 singles in the United Kingdom, from their debut in 1977 to their break-up in December 1982, including four number one hits. As of 2007, " That's Entertainment" and "Just Who Is the 5 O'Clock Hero?" remain the best-selling import singles of all time in the UK. They released one live album and six studio albums, the last of which, '' The Gift'', reached number one on the UK Albums Chart. Bruce Foxton
Bruce Douglas Foxton (born 1 September 1955) is an English singer, songwriter and musician. Foxton's music career spans more than 40 years. He came to prominence in the late 1970s as bassist and backing vocalist of mod revival band the Jam. He occasionally performed the lead vocals, such as on the songs " News of the World", " David Watts" and "Smithers-Jones". After the band's break-up, he pursued a brief solo career releasing one studio album, '' Touch Sensitive'', in 1984. The album's single "Freak" became a UK Top 20 hit in 1983. He played in several bands, including Sharp with former Jam member Rick Buckler, before joining Stiff Little Fingers in 1990. Sharp were an English new wave band active during the mid 1980s, featuring former Jam members Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler. They released one standalone single, in 1986. History After the Jam broke up in 1982, Bruce Foxton pursued a solo career and Rick Buckler formed Time UK, featuring Jimmy Edwards on vocals. After a stop-start career that took over two years to release three singles, and a rapid dwindling of the initial public interest in the band, they effectively broke up. Foxton, finding his solo career had followed a similar path to Time UK's, recorded several tracks with Buckler and Edwards. A standalone single, "Entertain Me", was released on the independent record label, Unicorn-Kanchana in 1986. Paul Richard Buckler (born 6 December 1955) is an English musician who is the former drummer of The Jam. Early years Buckler was born in the town of Woking in the county of Surrey, England. He received his education at Sheerwater Secondary School, in Woking. Whilst there in the early 1970s, he joined other pupils in a newly formed band named The Jam. The Jam He was the drummer for The Jam from its formation in the early 1970s through to its break up in the early 1980s, during which time it became a critically acclaimed and commercially successful rock band with an original sound as part of the mod revival movement in England's music and fashion scenes of the period. The Clash
The Clash were an English rock band formed in London in 1976 who were key players in the original wave of British punk rock. Billed as "The Only Band That Matters", they also contributed to the and new wave movements that emerged in the wake of punk and employed elements of a variety of genres including reggae, dub, funk, ska, and rockabilly. For most of their recording career, the Clash consisted of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Joe Strummer, lead guitarist and vocalist Mick Jones, bassist Paul Simonon, and drummer Nicky "Topper" Headon. Headon left the group in 1982 due to internal friction surrounding his increasing heroin addiction. Further internal friction led to Jones' departure the following year. Marquee Club
The Marquee Club was a music venue first located at 165 Oxford Street in London, when it opened in 1958 with a range of jazz and skiffle acts. Its most famous period was from 1964 to 1988 at 90 Wardour Street in Soho, and it finally closed when at 105 Charing Cross Road in 1996, although the name has been revived unsuccessfully three times in the 21st century. It was a small and relatively cheap club, located in the heart of the music industry in London's West End, and used to launch the careers of generations of rock acts.
