Fungi
A fungus ( : fungi or funguses) is any member of the group of eukaryotic organisms that includes microorganisms such as yeasts and molds, as well as the more familiar mushrooms. These organisms are classified as a kingdom, separately from the other eukaryotic kingdoms, which by one traditional classification include Plantae, Animalia, Protozoa, and Chromista. A characteristic that places fungi in a different kingdom from plants, bacteria, and some protists is chitin in their cell walls. Fungi, like animals, are heterotrophs; they acquire their food by absorbing dissolved molecules, typically by secreting digestive enzymes into their environment. Fungi do not photosynthesize. Growth is their means of mobility, except for spores (a few of which are flagellated), which may travel through the air or water. Fungi are the principal decomposers in ecological systems. These and other differences place fungi in a single group of related organisms, named the ''Eumycota'' (''t ... In 2007, Sondrio was given the Alpine Town of the Year award. History Formerly an Ancient Roman military camp, today's Sondrio was founded by the Lombards: in their language ''Sundrium'' meant "Exclusive property", referring to the status of free men (''arimanni'') of the holders of the city and the surrounding land. After the fall of the Lombard Kingdom in Italy, Sondrio became part of the Holy Roman Empire. The Capitanei of Vizzola, who controlled much of the Valtellina, had it in 1040 from the emperor Henry II. From 1310 to 1335 the city was involved in the war between the Guelph and Ghibelline factions of the nearby Como, and its war against Milan. After having resisted se ... Massarina Carolinensis
''Massarina carolinensis'' is a species of fungus in the Lophiostomataceae family. The species is found exclusively on the lower parts of the culms of the saltmarsh ''Juncus roemerianus'' on the Atlantic Coast of North Carolina. Taxonomy, classification, and naming The species was first described by mycologists Jan Kohlmeyer, Brigitte Volkmann-Kohlmeyer, and Ove Eriksson in a 1996 ''Mycological Research'' publication. The specific epithet ''carolinensis'' is the Latinized name of the state where it was first discovered. The species was tentatively assigned to ''Massarina'', although this genus is poorly known. Description The roughly spherical fruit bodies are 130–160 μm high by 145–175 μm wide, and immersed in the cortex of the plant. Although initially covered by the plant cuticle, the fungus is later exposed when the cuticle peels off to reveal an ostiolate, leathery ascomata. The ascomata grow singly or in groups, and are clypeate (covered with a shield-lik ... [...More Info...]       [...Related Items...]     OR:     [Wikipedia]   [Google]   [Baidu]   |
