Mass Party (1995)
The Mass Party was a political party of Thailand's People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD). Its main goal was campaigning against Thaksinomics. Origins In May 2006, PAD leaders established the Mass Party. Somkiat Pongpaiboon, party co-founder, claimed that "Our objective is to campaign against Thaksinomics." The mass party arose historically in opposition to the established élite or caucus-party system of the 18th to 19th centuries, representing the antithesis of the caucus party. The party unconventionally planned not to field MP candidates for the first five years, with Somkiat claiming that "If we field MP candidates, we will be trapped in vicious circles of money politics." People's Alliance For Democracy
The People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD; th, พันธมิตรประชาชนเพื่อประชาธิปไตย, Phanthamit Prachachon Pheu Prachathipatai; commonly known as "Yellow Shirts") is a Thai reactionary, monarchist political movement and pressure group. It was originally a coalition of protesters against Thaksin Shinawatra, the former Prime Minister of Thailand. Its leaders included media-mogul Sondhi Limthongkul and Major General Chamlong Srimuang. The PAD was a chief player in the political crisis of 2005–2006, the 2008 crisis, and the Cambodian–Thai border stand-off. Thaksinomics
Thaksinomics (a portmanteau of "Thaksin" and "economics") is a term used to refer to the economic set of policies of Thaksin Shinawatra, Prime Minister of Thailand from 2001 to 2006. There has been considerable controversy over the role Thaksinomics has played in Thailand's recovery from the 1997 Asian financial crisis. Among the most prominent advocates of Thaksin's economic policies is Morgan Stanley economist Daniel Lian. Somkiat Pongpaiboon
Somkiat Pongpaiboon (Thai script: สมเกียรติ พงษ์ไพบูลย์; 12 January 1950 – 14 November 2021) was a Thai Professor at Nakhon Ratchasima Rajabhat University, Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Thailand. He became a member of the Thai House of Representatives in 2007 from Democrat Party and a leader of the People's Alliance for Democracy, and the co-founder of the Mass Party. Somkiat was an advocate for the poor and a major critic of Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra. Activism and key works Somkiat claimed to have been investigated three times for organizing protests for poor farmers against government officials and politicians. Palang Dharma Party
The Palang Dharma Party ( th, พรรคพลังธรรม, ; translated as "power of Dharma", or "moral force", PDP for short) was a Buddhist-inspired political party in Thailand founded by Chamlong Srimuang in 1988, associated with the Santi Asoke sect of Buddhism. The Thai word ''tham'' can be used to refer both to "morality", and "dharma", the teachings of Buddhism. Phak Phalang Tham was a political party, not to be confused with its precursor, ''Ruam Phalang'' ("collective force"), the campaign group that backed Chamlong Srimuang in the 1985 Bangkok gubernatorial election. To some extent, the PDP evolved into a political party from Ruam Phalang. Pipob Thongchai ( th, พิภพ ธงไชย) is a non-governmental organization leader who advocates a wide range of issues. He has been active since he was a college student, when he was secretary of the University Student Federation of Thailand. He is also a former member of the Council of Socio-economic Consultants of Thailand, the Committee for Democratic Advocacy of Thailand, and the Children's Foundation of Thailand. Thongchai was an early supporter of Thaksin Shinawatra and called for general support from the civil society in 2001.
