Mascom Top 8 Cup
The Mascom Top 8 Cup is a football cup competition in Botswana. It was created in 2012, and features the top eight finishers from the Botswana Premier League. Since 2013, the winners qualify for the CAF Confederation Cup, as the FA Challenge Cup is not played. This was stopped in 2019 with the return of the FA Cup. Format The Mascom Top 8 Cup is played by the top eight finishers from the previous season of the Premier League. The quarter-finals and semi-finals are played as two-legged ties both home and away, with a once-off final. In the case where the scores are tied after the two-legged ties, the Away goals rule will apply to decide the winner. However, this rule only applies in the first 90 minutes. If the aggregate score and the away goals scored are level after the 90 minutes of the 2nd leg, the teams will proceed to extra time and the Away goals rule will be disregarded thereafter. Orapa United F
Orapa is a town located in the Central District of Botswana. It is the site of the Orapa diamond mine, the largest diamond-producing mine in the world, and is considered to be the diamond capital of the country. Nearby is another kimberlite mine owned by Lucara Diamond, thought to have very large reserves of diamonds. Madinda Ndlovu
Madinda Ndlovu (born 2 May 1965) is a Zimbabwean former footballer and manager currently in charge of Botswana Premier League club Gaborone United. He is generally considered one of the greatest Zimbabwean players of all time. After retiring Ndlovu began his managerial career as head coach of his boyhood club Highlanders in 1998. He first came to Botswana as the manager of Township Rollers in 2005 but lasted only two seasons before joining fellow Botswana Premier League club Nico United, helping them to a highest-ever league finish. Rahman Gumbo
Rahman Gumbo is a Zimbabwean retired footballer and currently manages Sue Flamingos. Career He was initially appointed to the managerial position of Zimbabwe in 2005, but was sacked following a 3–0 loss against Nigeria. He was appointed as manager of the Zimbabwe national team in 2012 for a second time on 8 February. On 8 March 2014, he was appointed manager of Botswana Premier League club Gaborone United. On 10 May 2016, Gumbo was appointed manager of Zimbabwe Premier League club Chicken Inn. He took up his post as manager on 1 July 2016. David Bright (football Manager)
David Bright (13 June 1956 – 25 January 2021) was a Botswana football coach. Biography He was considered to be one of Botswana’s most successful coaches. A former army major, Bright was often referred to by his former military rank. On 5 February 1992, Bright joined Mogoditshane Fighters in the Botswana First Division. During his 13 year spell, he led the team to three consecutive Botswana Premier League titles between 1999 and 2001. Bright has also managed Engen Santos, Bay United, Gaborone United and Bay United. He began his fourth spell in charge of the national team in July 2017, but was sacked on 19 February 2019, following an unsuccessful 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign. 2013–14 Mascom Top 8 Cup
The 2013–14 Mascom Top 8 Cup, also known as Mascom Top 8 Cup Season 3 for sponsorship reasons, was the third edition of the Mascom Top 8 Cup. It was played from November 2, 2013 to March 1, 2014 and featured the top eight teams from the 2012-13 Botswana Premier League. BDF XI defeated Township Rollers in the final to win their first title. History The 2013 tournament was played from November to March instead of February to May like the previous tournament. It was also the first tournament to span two calendar years. It was the only tournament to take place in Botswana for the season, since the 2014 FA Challenge Cup was not played, therefore the winner represented the country in the CAF Confederation Cup. The 2015–16 Mascom Top 8 Cup, also known as the Mascom Top 8 Season 5, was the fifth edition of the Mascom Top 8 Cup. It was played from 29 October 2015 to 23 April 2016 by the top eight teams from the 2014-15 Botswana Premier League. It was won by Orapa United. Gaborone United were the defending champions but were eliminated by BDF XI in the quarterfinals. Orapa United went on to win the tournament, making them the first ever northern team to win the Mascom Top 8 Cup. Jwaneng Galaxy Football Club is a Botswana football club based in Jwaneng. The club currently plays in the Botswana Premier League. History Galaxy were founded in 2015 after two local clubs merged: the Jwaneng Comets and the Debswana Youngsters. Galaxy were promoted to the Botswana Premier League for the first time in 2015, winning the First Division South with a match to spare. Botswana Premier League Led by Zambian coach Mike Sithole, Galaxy won the club's first silverware in 2016–17, the Mascom Top 8 Cup, beating Orapa United in extra time in the final.
