The 49er and 49er FX is a two-handed skiff-type high-performance sailing dinghy. The two crew work on different roles with the helm making many tactical decisions, as well as steering, and the crew doing most of the sail control. Both of the crew are equipped with their own trapeze and sailing is done while cantilevered over the water to the fullest extent to balance against the sails. The 49er was designed by Julian Bethwaite (the son of Frank Bethwaite) and developed by a consortium consisting of Bethwaites, Performance Sailcraft Japan, Peter Johnston, and Ovington boats. The boat has been an Olympic class since it was selected by the International Sailing Federation to be the men's high performance double handed dinghy Sydney Summer Games of 2000. ILCA 4
The Laser 4.7 or ILCA 4 is a one-design dinghy class in the Laser series and is a one-design class of sailboat. All Lasers are built to the same specifications. The Laser is 4.06 m (13 ft 10 in) long, with a waterline length of 3.81 m (12 ft 6 in). The hull weight is 59 kg (130 lb). The boat is manufactured by ILCA and World Sailing approved builders. Lasers are cat-rigged, meaning they have only one sail. The 4.7 uses the same hull and top mast section as the Laser, but has a different, shorter bottom mast section as well as a smaller sail. The bottom mast section is pre-bent which effectively reduces the power of the rig, and the sail is only 4.7 square meters, as opposed to 7 for the Laser Standard or 5.7 for the Laser Radial. The Laser Radial or ILCA 6 is a popular one-design class of small sailing dinghy, originally built by Laser Performance and World sailing approved manufactures. It is a singlehanded boat, meaning that it is sailed by one person. The Laser Radial is a variant of the Laser Standard, with shorter mast and reduced sail area, allowing light sailors to sail in heavy winds. It raced by women, U18 men and by male masters. The International Class is recognised by World Sailing. The class is referred to as the "Radial" due to the Radial technique used to create the sail with the panels stemming from the clew (far bottom corner) and reaching up the sail to the luff (the front edge). The women 49er (dinghy), 49er FX was a sailing event at the 2020 Summer Olympics and took place between 27 July and 3 August. The defending champions, Martine Grael and Kahena Kunze from Brazil at the 2020 Summer Olympics, Brazil, won the event. Tina Lutz and Susann Beucke from Germany at the 2020 Summer Olympics, Germany were the second, and Annemiek Bekkering and Annette Duetz from the Netherlands at the 2020 Summer Olympics, Netherlands won the bronze medal. For Lutz, Beucke, Bekkring, and Duetz this was the first Olympic medal. The medal race was originally scheduled for 2 August, but had to be postponed due to the lack of wind.
