María Fernández (footballer)
María Fernández Almenar (born 1 February 1985) is a Spanish retired women's soccer, football midfielder. Career Having initially joined as a 13 year old, Fernández played for Levante UD (women), Levante in Spain's Primera División (women), Primera División between 2005 and 2011, winning the league in 2008. In 2011, she announced her retirement from the sport to take up a career as a teacher. She cited the low salary in women's football in Spain as a reason for retiring. Levante Unión Deportiva Femenino is the women's football team of Valencian football club Levante UD, based at Ciudad Deportiva in Buñol and playing in the Liga F. History Founded in 1993 as San Vicente CFF, the team was absorbed by Levante in 1998 after it won the national championship in its debut season in the top category.
