María Eugenia Etcheverry
María Eugenia Etcheverry is a Uruguayan pilot in the Uruguayan Air Force who holds the rank of Major. She was one of the first combat pilots in Latin America, and was the first female Major and the first female commander of a squadron in the Uruguayan Air Force. Career María Eugenia Etcheverry's father was a military pilot, but she wanted to pursue a military career on her own. In 1997, after the Uruguayan Air Force allowed women to join for the first time, María Eugenia Etcheverry was one of the first women to enroll at the Military School of Aeronautics alongside Carolina Arévalo. At the time, she was required to adhere to rules designed for men, such as short haircuts. Uruguayan Air Force
The Uruguayan Air Force ( es, Fuerza Aérea Uruguaya, abbreviated FAU) is the air service branch of the Armed Forces of Uruguay. Originally created as part of the National Army of Uruguay, the Air Force was established as a separate branch on December 4, 1953. It is the youngest and also the smallest branch of the Armed Forces of Uruguay. Pilatus PC-7
The Pilatus PC-7 Turbo Trainer is a low-wing tandem-seat training aircraft designed and manufactured by Pilatus Aircraft of Switzerland. The aircraft is capable of all basic training functions including aerobatics, instrument, tactical and night flying. The PC-7 was developed from the preceding Pilatus P-3, largely differing by the adoption of a turboprop engine, a bubble canopy, and a new one-piece wing. Introduced during the 1970s, it has since developed a sizable presence of the global trainer market. Santa Bernardina International Airport () is a military and general aviation airport serving Durazno, capital of the Durazno Department of Uruguay. The facilities are shared with the Tte. 2° Mario W. Parallada Air Base of the Uruguayan Air Force. The airport is across the Yí River, northeast from downtown Durazno. The Durazno VOR-DME (Ident: DUR) is located on the field. Cessna A-37 Dragonfly
The Cessna A-37 Dragonfly, or Super Tweet, is an American light attack aircraft developed from the T-37 Tweet basic trainer in the 1960s and 1970s by Cessna of Wichita, Kansas. The A-37 was introduced during the Vietnam War and remained in peacetime service afterward. Design and development The growing American military involvement in Vietnam in the early 1960s led to strong interest in counter-insurgency (COIN) aircraft. In late 1962, the U.S. Air Force's Special Air Warfare Center at Eglin Air Force Base's Hurlburt Field in Florida evaluated two T-37Cs for the role. The Air Force found the T-37 promising, but wanted an improved version of the aircraft that could carry a much larger payload, and had much greater endurance and better short-field performance. Women in Uruguay are women who were born in, who live in, and are from Uruguay. According to ''Countries and Their Cultures'', there is a "very high proportion" of Uruguayan women participating in the labor force of the South American country. The Uruguayan legislation maintains that the women of Uruguay have equal rights to power, authority, and privileges".
