Maryland Route 589
Maryland Route 589 (MD 589) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known as Racetrack Road, the state highway runs from U.S. Route 50 (US 50) at Grays Corner north to US 113 and MD 575 in Showell. MD 589 provides access to the planned community of Ocean Pines and Ocean Downs, a harness racing venue with a casino. The first portion of the state highway was constructed through Showell in 1935. MD 589 was completed to US 50 in 1949 and 1950. Route description MD 589 begins at an intersection with US 50 (Ocean Gateway) at Grays Corner. The state highway immediately encounters MD 707 (Grays Corner Road); the highway is officially MD 707B to the west and MD 707E to the east of the intersection. MD 589 heads north as a three-lane undivided road with one lane northbound and two lanes southbound. After passing Ocean Downs, the southbound direction reduces to one lane. Selbyville is a town in Sussex County, Delaware, United States. Its population was 2,167 at the 2010 census, an increase of 31.7% over the previous decade. It is part of the Salisbury, Maryland-Delaware Metropolitan Statistical Area. History Selbyville was founded in 1778 and incorporated in 1902. It was originally known as Sandy Branch, due to its location on a branch of that name emanating in the Cypress Swamp at the head of the St. Martin's River. A grist mill and saw mill opened there in the late 18th century. In 1842, Sampson Selby began marking packages for delivery to his country store, Selby-Ville. By 1918, Selbyville was the major supplier of strawberries for the east coast, an industry that remained strong until the 1930s. Diamond Interchange
A diamond interchange is a common type of road junction, used where a controlled-access highway crosses a minor road. Design The freeway itself is grade-separated from the minor road, one crossing the other over a bridge. Approaching the interchange from either direction, an off-ramp diverges only slightly from the freeway and runs directly across the minor road, becoming an on-ramp that returns to the freeway in similar fashion. The two places where the ramps meet the road are treated as conventional intersections. In the United States, where this form of interchange is very common, particularly in rural areas, traffic on the off-ramp typically faces a stop sign at the minor road, while traffic turning onto the freeway is unrestricted. Ocean Pines is a census-designated place (CDP) in Worcester County, Maryland, United States. The population was 11,710 at the 2010 census. Harness racing is a form of horse racing in which the horses race at a specific gait (a trot or a pace). They usually pull a two-wheeled cart called a sulky, or spider, or chariot occupied by a driver. Ocean Downs
Ocean Downs is a casino and harness racing track in Berlin, Maryland, near Ocean City. It is owned and operated by Churchill Downs Inc. Construction started in 1947 as a harness racetrack, and it opened in 1949 with Ocean Downs Racing Association (ODRA) as owner. After two failing years, ODRA began to speculate switching to thoroughbred racing, but that did not happen. In 1986, the Maryland Racing Commission was hesitant to approve race days at Ocean Downs due to the track's management, so the owners of Rosecroft Raceway, a competing harness track in Maryland, purchased Ocean Downs and renamed it Delmarva Downs. In 1987, real estate developer Mark Vogel purchased the racetrack. Ocean Downs went into bankruptcy in 1991, however, and it was sold to Fred Weisman, a California entrepreneur.
