Maryland Route 234
Maryland Route 234 (MD 234) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known as Budds Creek Road, the state highway runs from U.S. Route 301 (US 301) in Allens Fresh east to MD 5 in Leonardtown. MD 234 is the primary east–west highway of southern Charles County and western St. Mary's County, connecting the St. Mary's County seat of Leonardtown and the communities of Clements, Chaptico, Budds Creek, Wicomico, and Newport with US 301, which heads north to La Plata, the county seat of Charles County, and south to the Governor Harry W. Nice Memorial Bridge over the Potomac River. MD 234 originally followed what is now MD 238 from Chaptico east to MD 5 at Helen. Potomac Speedway
Potomac Speedway is a 3/8 mile clay oval raceway located in Budds Creek, Maryland, near Charlotte Hall. The raceway was first raced on in 1973. Races are typically held on Friday or Saturday nights. Regular events include Super Late Models, Limited Late Models, Street Stocks, and Hobby Stocks and 4 cylinders. The speedway also holds events for Modifieds, Crate Late Models, Strictly Stocks and Hornets. Potomac Speedway has a seating capacity of about 4,000 in the main grandstands and can hold an additional 1,000 in the pit area. The speedway typically draws top drivers from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Delaware and West Virginia. Greg Gunter is the current promoter of the track. Sarum (Newport, Maryland)
Sarum is a historic home located at Newport, Charles County, Maryland. The oldest extant part of the house was built in 1717 by Joseph Pile on or near the site of his grandfather's 17th century house. It was a box-framed hall and parlor dwelling, 32 by 18 feet. A shed was added in 1736; later in the 1800s the ends were extended and new walls of brick were constructed giving the house its present dimensions. Sarum was patented to John Pile in 1662, and remained in the ownership of the Pile family until 1836. It is one of Maryland's finest small Colonial dwellings. Zekiah Swamp is part of the Potomac River basin in Charles County, Maryland in the United States. The swamp is of braided stream stretching the length of Charles County and is a tributary of the Potomac River. It sits at an elevation of and of its southern end is protected as the Zekiah Swamp Natural Environment Area. The Pope's Creek Subdivision is a CSX Transportation railroad line in Maryland, running from Bowie to Morgantown where the Morgantown Generating Station is located and the Chalk Point Generating Station. History The Pope's Creek Subdivision was originally built by the Baltimore and Potomac Railroad. The company was organized on December 19, 1858, and began surveying the route May 3, 1859. Construction started in 1861 but progressed slowly until 1867, when the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) and its ally, the Northern Central Railway (NCRY), bought the company. Maryland Route 237 (MD 237) is a state highway in the U.S. state of Maryland. Known as Chancellors Run Road, the route runs from MD 246 near Lexington Park north to MD 235 in California.
