Mary Flora Bell (born 26 May 1957) is an English woman who, as a juvenile, murdered two preschool-age boys in Benwell and Scotswood, Scotswood, an inner suburb of Newcastle upon Tyne in 1968. Bell committed her first murder when she was 10 years old. In both instances, Bell informed her victim he had a sore throat, which she would massage before proceeding to Strangling, strangle him. Bell was convicted of both murders in December 1968, in a trial held at Moot Hall, Newcastle upon Tyne, Newcastle Assizes when she was 11 years old, and in which her actions were judged to have been committed under Diminished responsibility in English law, diminished responsibility. Mary Bell (aviator)
Mary Teston Luis Bell (3 December 1903 – 6 February 1979) was an Australian aviator and founding leader of the Women's Air Training Corps (WATC), a volunteer organisation that provided support to the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) during World War II. She later helped establish the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force (WAAAF), the country's first and largest women's wartime service, which grew to more than 18,000 members by 1944. Born Mary Fernandes in Tasmania, Bell married a RAAF officer in 1923 and obtained her pilot's licence in 1927. Given temporary command of the WAAAF on its formation in 1941, she was passed over as its inaugural director in favour of corporate executive Clare Stevenson. Bell refused the post of deputy director and resigned, but subsequently rejoined and served until the final months of the war. She and her husband later became farmers. Mary Bell (born July 28, 1840) was an American nurse and hospital matron during the American Civil War. Civil War service Bell was born in Hillsboro, Ohio. She left Ohio in September 1863 to join the Civil War effort. Her work began with her husband A.O. Hartley, who was a hospital steward, at Covington Barracks in Kentucky. While the two were in camp, there were outbreaks of diseases such as smallpox and spotted fever. In November, Bell was ordered to Munfordsville, Kentucky, where she was soon appointed matron of a hospital by its head surgeon. Part of her duties included taking special care of the patients' diets, often poor. Bell remained at this location until May 1864, when she went to a Jacksonville hospital as troops moved to the front. Mary Bell (1885–1943) was a Scottish politician, one of the first Scottish women to be elected as a local councillor, and the first female senior magistrate of the city of Glasgow. Political career Bell was one of a pioneering group of five women who were elected in 1920 which included Jessica Baird-Smith & Mary Anderson Snodgrass elected as Moderate councillors, and Eleanor Stewart (trade unionist) and Mary Barbour as Labour candidates. She was councillor for the Langside area of the city, and the first women magistrate to represent the Glasgow Corporation at a sitting of the High Court in Glasgow. In 1924, she was promoted to the position of depute river baillie of Glasgow, at the same time as Mary Barbour was elected as baillie. Mary Hemings Bell (1753-after 1834) was born into slavery, most likely in Charles City County, Virginia, as the oldest child of Elizabeth Hemings, a mixed-race slave held by John Wayles. After the death of Wayles in 1773, Elizabeth, Mary, and her family were inherited by Thomas Jefferson, the husband of Martha Wayles Skelton, a daughter of Wayles, and all moved to Monticello. While Jefferson was in France, Hemings was hired out to Thomas Bell, a wealthy white merchant in Charlottesville, Virginia. She became his common-law wife and they had two children together. Mary Bell (22 April 1844 – 23 October 1874) and Annie (Ann) Bell (22 April 1844 – 26 March 1926) were pioneering Christian Missionaries and members of the OMF International, China Inland Mission (CIM). They were born in Great Waltham, Essex, the twin daughters of William Bell (a local shoemaker) and his wife Sophia (née Collins). The family were raised as members of the Little Waltham Independent Congregational Church. Mary travelled to China as a member of the Lammermuir Party in 1866 and subsequently married William David Rudland, a fellow missionary and member of the CIM.
