Mary Warburg (artist)
Mary Warburg, born Mary Hertz (October 13, 1866 – December 4, 1934), was a German painter and sculptor. She was married to the art historian Aby Warburg, the founder of the Warburg Institute, London. Mary Warburg was a daughter of the Hamburg senator and merchant Adolph Ferdinand Hertz and his wife Maria, née Goßler. From the age of 16 she took private drawing lessons and often travelled with her father. She married Aby Warburg in 1897. They moved to Florence, where Mary Warburg entered into artistic exchange with the sculptor Adolf Hildebrand and the painter Arnold Böcklin. After four years, the Warburgs returned to Hamburg. Mary Warburg created drawings, pastels, watercolours – landscapes as well as portraits and figurative studies – and sculptures. She exhibited her works from the 1890s in Hamburg, where the director of the Hamburger Kunsthalle, Alfred Lichtwark, was a prominent supporter of her art. ''Pan'' (1895-1915) was a Berlin-based German arts magazine, published by the PAN co-operative of artists, poets and critics. Michael Diers
Michael Diers (born 15 March 1950, in Werl, West Germany) is a German people, German art historian and professor of art history in Hamburg and Berlin. Diers studied art history, literature, and philosophy in Münster and Hamburg, where he received his doctorate with a doctoral dissertation, thesis on Aby Warburg. He also received his postdoctoral lecture qualification in 1994. From 1990 to 1992 he was assistant professor at the Kulturwissenschaftliches Institut, Essen, and subsequently at the Department of Art History, Universität Hamburg, in the joint research project "Politische Ikonographie". In 1994 he became lecturer at the Universität Jena, in 1999 at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, where he also served as Director of the Department of Art History (2000–2002). Alfred Lichtwark (14 November 1852 – 13 January 1914) was a German art historian, museum curator, and art educator in Hamburg. He is one of the founders of museum education and the art education movement. Background and career Alfred Lichtwark was the son of Herr Johann Karl Ernst Lichtwark, a minor lord who owned the Reitbrook Mill. From his father's first marriage he had three half-siblings. Alfred Lichtwark's mother Johanne Helene Henrietta (née Bach) (1829–1909) was believed to be a direct descendant of the composer Johann Sebastian Bach. Arnold Böcklin
Arnold Böcklin (16 October 182716 January 1901) was a Swiss symbolist painter. Biography He was born in Basel. His father, Christian Frederick Böcklin (b. 1802), was descended from an old family of Schaffhausen, and engaged in the silk trade. His mother, Ursula Lippe, was a native of the same city. Arnold studied at the Düsseldorf academy under Schirmer, and became a friend of Anselm Feuerbach. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. Schirmer, who recognized in him a student of exceptional promise, sent him to Antwerp and Brussels, where he copied the works of Flemish and Dutch masters. Böcklin then went to Paris, worked at the Louvre, and painted several landscapes. After serving his time in the army, Böcklin set out for Rome in March 1850.
