Mary Vaughan Jones
Mary Vaughan Jones (28 May 1918–April/May/June 1983) was a celebrated Welsh children's author and schoolteacher. She was born at 'Firs Cottage', Maenan near Llanrwst in 1918, and died in the Rhuddlan area, Clwyd in 1983. Jones authored approximately 20 books, contributing regularly to children's literature in Wales, and the magazines of the Urdd. Many of her books have been re-published by Gymdeithas Lyfrau Ceredigion. Many new books are based on her characters, for example: ''Sali Mali a'r Ceffyl Gwyllt'', Dylan Williams, 2006. Various children's television programmes and merchandise connected to her characters have also been produced by S4C. The original illustrations in her books were the work of Rowena Wyn Jones and later, Jac Jones. Maenan
Maenan is a rural settlement in Conwy, Wales, located approximately 4 miles to the north of Llanrwst and 3 miles to the south of the village of Eglwysbach. The population of the area is approximately 300 people, and more than 75% of the population are Welsh speakers. Maenan shares a community council with the nearby village of Llanddoged. Tir Na N-Og Award
The Tir na n-Og Awards (abbreviated TnaO) are a set of annual children's literary awards in Wales from 1976. They are presented by the Books Council of Wales to the best books published during the preceding calendar year in each of three awards categories, one English-language and two Welsh-language. Their purpose is " o raisethe standard of children's and young people's books and to encourage the buying and reading of good books." There is no restriction to fiction or prose. Each prize is £1,000. The awards are named for Tír na nÓg, the "Land of the Young", an otherworldly realm in Irish mythology. Bangor Normal College
The Normal College, Bangor ( cy, Y Coleg Normal) was an independent teacher training college, founded in 1858. It was created through the efforts of the British and Foreign School Society and the educator Sir Hugh Owen, and was funded by £11,000 raised through subscription and £2,000 of Government money. Teaching began on temporary premises in January 1858 and the College opened on its permanent site in 1862. In 1979 it changed its name to ''Y Coleg Normal, Bangor'' or in English: The Normal College, Bangor and in 1996 it became part of University of Wales Bangor. The term "normal school" originated in the early 16th century from the French ''école normale''.
