Mary Stopford, Countess Of Courtown (died 1810)
Mary Stopford, Countess of Courtown (1736 - 3 January 1810), formerly Mary Powys, was the wife of James Stopford, 2nd Earl of Courtown. Mary was the daughter of Richard Powys, MP, of Hintlesham Hall, Suffolk, and his wife, the former Lady Mary Brudenell. Her sister Elizabeth married Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney. Following their father's death in 1743, their mother remarried, her second husband being Thomas Bowlby, MP. Mary married the future earl on 19 April 1762 at St. George's, Hanover Square, when he was an MP representing an Irish constituency. James Stopford, 2nd Earl Of Courtown
James Stopford, 2nd Earl of Courtown KP, PC (Ire) (28 May 1731 – 30 March 1810), known as Viscount Stopford from 1762 to 1770, was an Anglo-Irish peer and Tory politician who sat in the British House of Commons between 1774 and 1793. Courtown was the eldest son of James Stopford, 1st Earl of Courtown, and his wife Elizabeth (née Smith), and was educated at Trinity College Dublin. He was elected to the Irish House of Commons for Taghmon in 1761, a seat he held until 1768, and later sat as a Member of the British House of Commons for Great Bedwyn in 1774 and for Marlborough from 1780 to 1793. Between 1784 and 1793 he served as Treasurer of the Household under William Pitt the Younger. Courtown was made a Knight of the Order of St Patrick in 1783 and admitted to the Irish Privy Council in 1784. Hintlesham Hall
Hintlesham is a small village in Suffolk, England, situated roughly halfway between Ipswich and Hadleigh. It is in the Belstead Brook electoral division of Suffolk County Council. The village is notable for Hintlesham Hall, a 16th-century Grade I listed country house, now operated as a hotel. The church The parish church of St Nicolas is a typical Decorated church, and therefore not typical for Suffolk. It has many memorials to the Tymperley family and the squint in the north wall shows that the vestry was once a chapel, possibly a chantry to the family, converted to secular use in the 1540s. The stairway to the roodloft in the south wall is one of the best preserved in the county. Elizabeth Townshend, Viscountess Sydney (7 April 1736 – 1 May 1826) was the wife of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney. She was the daughter of Richard Powys, MP, and his wife, the former Lady Mary Brudenell, daughter of George Brudenell, 3rd Earl of Cardigan. Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney
Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney (24 February 1733 – 30 June 1800) was a British politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1754 to 1783 when he was raised to the peerage as Baron Sydney. He held several important Cabinet posts in the second half of the 18th century. The cities of Sydney in Nova Scotia, Canada, and Sydney in New South Wales, Australia were named in his honour, in 1785 and 1788, respectively. Thomas William Bowlby (7 January 1818 – 22 September 1860) was a British correspondent for ''The Times'' in Germany and China in the 19th century. A "pioneer in the risky business of war reportage", his torture and death during the Second Opium War was a factor in the British and French decision to raze the Old Summer Palace (Yuanmingyuan) in Beijing. Early life Born in Gibraltar, he was the son of Thomas Bowlby, a Captain in the Royal Artillery, and Williamina Martha Arnold Balfour, daughter of Major-General William Balfour, a former Lieutenant-Governor of New Brunswick. James George Stopford, 3rd Earl of Courtown KP, PC (15 August 1765 – 15 June 1835), known as Viscount Stopford from 1770 to 1810, was an Anglo-Irish peer and Tory politician. Courtown was the eldest son of James Stopford, 2nd Earl of Courtown, and his wife Mary (née Powys). Educated at Eton College, he served with the Coldstream Guards and achieved the rank of captain. In 1790, he was elected to the House of Commons for Great Bedwyn, a seat he held until 1796 and again from 1806 to 1807. He also represented Lanark from 1796 to 1802, Dumfries from 1803 to 1806 and Marlborough from 1807 to 1810. Edward Stopford (1766-1837)
Sir Edward Stopford (28 September 1766 – 14 September 1837) was an Anglo-Irish soldier and politician. Early life Edward Stopford was born on 28 September 1766. He was the second son of James Stopford, 2nd Earl of Courtown, and his wife Mary (née Powys). James Stopford, 3rd Earl of Courtown, was his elder brother and Sir Robert Stopford his younger brother. Career He served in the British Army and achieved the rank of Lieutenant-General. In 1810, he succeeded his elder brother as member of parliament for Marlborough, a seat he held until 1818. He was honoured when he was made a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Bath and Colonel of the 41st Regiment of Foot from 1819 to his death. Personal life He never married, but he had an affair with a French actress, Mademoiselle Anaïs, with whom he had a son, Edward Stopford Claremont, who also became a British Army general. Robert Stopford (Royal Navy Officer)
Admiral Sir Robert Stopford (5 February 1768 – 25 June 1847), was a distinguished officer in the Royal Navy whose career spanned over 60 years, from the French Revolutionary Wars to the Syrian War. Naval career Stopford was the third son of James Stopford, 2nd Earl of Courtown, and his wife Mary (née Powys). He joined the Royal Navy in 1780 and became a Lieutenant in 1785. Commander Stopford was captain of between December 1789 and October 1790. In 1790 he was promoted to captain at the age of 22 and was briefly captain of HMS ''Lowestoffe''. Stopford fought at the Battle of the Glorious First of June in 1794, commanding the frigate (32). Sir Joshua Reynolds (16 July 1723 – 23 February 1792) was an English painter, specialising in portraits. John Russell said he was one of the major European painters of the 18th century. Ham Common is an area of common land in Ham, London. It is a conservation area in, and managed by, the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It comprises , the second largest area of common land in the borough, smaller than Barnes Common. It is divided into two distinct habitats, grassland and woodland, separated by the A307, Upper Ham Road.
