Mary Johnson Lowe
Mary Johnson Lowe (June 10, 1924 – February 27, 1999) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Education and career Born in New York City, Lowe received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Hunter College of the City University of New York in 1951. She received a Bachelor of Laws from Brooklyn Law School in 1954. She received a Master of Laws from Columbia Law School in 1955. She was in private practice of law in New York City from 1955 to 1971. She was a judge of the Criminal Court in New York City from 1971 to 1973. She was an Acting Supreme Court Justice of the New York County Supreme Court from 1973 to 1974. She was a judge of the Bronx County Supreme Court from 1975 to 1976. She was a Justice of the Supreme Court of New York from 1977 to 1978. Senior Status
Senior status is a form of semi-retirement for United States federal judges. To qualify, a judge in the Federal judiciary of the United States, federal court system must be at least 65 years old, and the sum of the judge's age and years of service as a federal judge must be at least 80 years. As long as senior judges carry at least a 25 percent caseload or meet other criteria for activity, they remain entitled to maintain a staffed office and chambers, including a secretary and their normal complement of law clerks, and they continue to receive annual cost-of-living increases. Senior judges vacate their seats on the bench, and the President of the United States, president may appoint new full-time judges to fill those seats. Some U.S. states have similar systems for senior judges. The United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (in case citations, S.D.N.Y.) is a federal trial court whose geographic jurisdiction encompasses eight counties of New York State. Two of these are in New York City: New York (Manhattan) and Bronx; six are in Downstate: Westchester, Putnam, Rockland, Orange, Dutchess, and Sullivan. Appeals from the Southern District of New York are taken to the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit (except for patent claims and claims against the U.S. government under the Tucker Act, which are appealed to the Federal Circuit).
