Mary Eva Kelly
Mary Eva Kelly (later O'Doherty) (1826–1910) was an Irish-Australian poet and writer who was widely known as "Eva" of "the Nation". Biography Born in Headford, County Galway, Ireland, Kelly was educated privately with other members of her family. Her first poems were translations, including one of Alphonse de Lamartine's ''Dying Christian''. Kelly became famous for her contributions to ''The Nation'', the first being "The Banshee". Initially using her own name, she adopted the non-de-plume ''Eva'' starting with her "Lament for Davis". She also contributed prose, essays and ballads. She was one of the three most famous women writers for ''The Nation'', who were known as "the Three Graces". During the period that Kelly wrote for the ''Nation'', she interacted with Olivia Knight, who was known as "Thomasine of the ''Nation''". Headford
Headford () is a small town in County Galway, located 26 km north of Galway city in the west of Ireland. It is an angling centre for the eastern shore of Lough Corrib, and Greenfields, approximately 6.5 km west of the town, is its boating harbour. The town is situated next to the Black River (known also for its trout angling) which is the county boundary with Mayo. Located on the N84 national secondary road from Galway to Castlebar and the R333, and R334 regional roads, the town is a commuter town to Galway City. The town is the centre of an area which contains a number of prehistoric burial cairns, Iron Age stone enclosures, early Norman and later castles, and several monastic sites. These include Ross Errilly Friary, located northwest of Headford, which is one of the best preserved monastic ruins of its period in Ireland. Dublin
Dublin (; , or ) is the capital and largest city of Republic of Ireland, Ireland. Justin McCarthy (1830–1912)
Justin McCarthy (22 November 1830 – 24 April 1912) was an Irish nationalist, journalist, historian, novelist and politician. He was a Member of Parliament (MP) from 1879 to 1900, taking his seat in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Early life McCarthy was born in Cork City, Cork, and was educated there. He began his career as a journalist, aged 18, in Cork. From 1853 to 1859 he was in Liverpool, on the staff of the ''Northern Daily Times''. In March 1855, he married Charlotte Ailman. In 1860 he moved to London, as parliamentary reporter to the '' Morning Star'', of which he became editor in 1864. He gave up his post in 1868, and, after a lecturing tour in the United States, joined the staff of the '' Daily News'' as leader-writer in 1870 (where he was employed for the next twenty-three years) and was also to write for several periodicals including ''The Fortnightly Review'', ''The Contemporary Review'' and ''The Nineteenth Century''.
