Mary Ellis
Mary Ellis (born May Belle Elsas, June 15, 1897 – January 30, 2003) was an American actress and singer appearing on stage, radio, television and film, best known for her musical theatre roles, particularly in Ivor Novello works. After appearing with the Metropolitan Opera beginning in 1918, she acted on Broadway, creating the title role in ''Rose-Marie''. In 1930, she emigrated to England, where she gained additional fame and continued to perform into the 1990s. She also became known for film roles, including in ''The 3 Worlds of Gulliver'' in 1960. Mary Beth Ellis
Mary Beth Ellis (born July 12, 1977) is a retired American long-distance triathlete. She holds the record for the fastest iron-distance race by an American woman, set at Ironman Austria in 2011 with a time of 8:43:34. She is the 2015 ITU Long Distance Triathlon champion and has taken second place at both the 2008 and 2009 Ironman 70.3 World Championship. She has been named USA Triathlon's Non-Olympic/ITU Female Athlete of the Year for both 2011 and 2012. Athletic career Ellis was born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Rehoboth Beach and Lewes, Delaware by Stephen and Kathleen Ellis. Mary Gordon Ellis (April 21, 1889 – September 9, 1934) was an educator and politician from South Carolina. She became the first woman elected to the South Carolina Legislature with her election to the South Carolina State Senate in 1928. Life Mary Gordon was born to Alexander M. Gordon and Mary Gamble Gordon, Sr. in the small community of Gourdin, near Kingstree; of Scotch-Irish descent, she was one of ten children. When she was small, the family moved into Kingstree, where she grew up, graduating from Kingstree High School in 1909. Already as a child she evinced interest in politics, hanging around the steps of the county courthouse while listening to legal discussions, and sometimes sneaking inside to watch the court proceedings. The Mary Ellis grave is a grave located behind an AMC Theatre on U.S. Route 1 in New Brunswick, Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The granite gravestone is located on a high stonework pyramid in the back parking lot. Seven relatives are also buried and marked on the grave itself. Mary Ellis, a native of South Carolina, was a property owner and fierce feminist in New Brunswick, noted to even vote in city elections before the right for women to vote was passed. Living on Livingston Avenue, Ellis maintained a garden on her property until a local politician, James Schureman, took the land to build a street on it. In response, she posted a sign on the new Schureman Street calling it "Oppression Street". Historians believed that around 1813, Ellis moved from downtown New Brunswick to a secluded area known as Mount Hemlock, which overlooked the Raritan River. She lived there until her death in 1828. Mary-Ellis Bunim (July 9, 1946 – January 29, 2004) was an American television producer and co-creator of MTV's ''The Real World'' and ''Road Rules''. Biography A native of Massachusetts, Bunim began her career in daytime dramas. She oversaw more than 2,500 hours of programming as executive producer of ''Search for Tomorrow'' (1974–1981), ''As the World Turns'' (1981–1984), '' Santa Barbara'' (1984–1987) and '' Loving'' (1989–1990). Mary Ellis Peltz (4 May 1896 – 24 October 1981) was an American drama and music critic, magazine editor, poet and writer on music. Born Mary Ellis Opdycke, Peltz was educated at the Spence School and Barnard College (Phi Beta Kappa). At the age of 24 she joined the staff of ''The New York Sun'' as assistant music critic. She left the paper in 1924 at the time of her marriage to John DeWitt Peltz. She later worked for ''The Junior League Magazine'' as a drama critic and published both poetry and articles in a variety of publications; including ''Harper's Magazine'' and ''Poetry''. In 1936 she became the first chief editor of ''Opera News'', a position she held until 1957 when she founded the Metropolitan Opera's archives. Mary Ellis (Civil War Nurse)
Mary Ellis was a Union nurse during the American Civil War. Biography Ellis assisted her husband in raising the 1st Missouri Cavalry regiment, and went to the field along with them. The regiment went to camp on August 1, 1861, and Ellis began nursing immediately when there was a measles outbreak in camp. Ellis performed numerous roles as a nurse, including assistant to the head surgeon. She recounts in a letter to Mary G. Holland that once Ellis fainted during surgery, but quickly returned to service once she was recovered. At the cavalry charge at Sugar Creek, Ellis worked to transport injured soldiers out of the field and to a house that was serving as a hospital. Ellis even saved the life of a man whom the regiment surgeon overdosed on medication. Though the doctors thought his recovery to be impossible and laughed at Ellis's attempts to revive him, Ellis successfully saved the soldier's life.
