Mary Earley
Mary Earley (1900–1993) was an American painter born in St. Louis, Missouri. She is known for her New Deal era murals. Biography Earley moved to Chicago with her family and then located to New York City. She attended the Art Students League of New York where she studied with Kenneth Hayes Miller, Kimon Nicolaïdes, and William C. Palmer. In 1940 Earley's mural ''Down-Rent War, Around 1845'' was installed in the Delhi, New York post office. The Smithsonian American Art Museum (commonly known as SAAM, and formerly the National Museum of American Art) is a museum in Washington, D.C., part of the Smithsonian Institution. US Post Office–Middleburgh is a historic post office building located at Middleburgh in Schoharie County, New York, United States. It was designed and built 1939–1940, and is one of a number of post offices in New York State designed by the Office of the Supervising Architect of the Treasury Department under Louis A. Simon. The building is in the Colonial Revival style and is a one-story, five-bay, steel frame structure on a raised concrete foundation. The New Deal was a series of programs, public work projects, financial reforms, and regulations enacted by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in the United States between 1933 and 1939. Major federal programs agencies included the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), the Works Progress Administration (WPA), the Civil Works Administration (CWA), the Farm Security Administration (FSA), the National Industrial Recovery Act of 1933 (NIRA) and the Social Security Administration (SSA). United States Post Office Murals
United States post office murals are notable examples of New Deal art produced during the years 1934–1943. They were commissioned through a competitive process by the United States Department of the Treasury. Some 1,400 murals were created for federal post office buildings in more than 1,300 U.S. cities. Murals still extant are the subject of efforts by the U.S. Postal Service to preserve and protect them. In 2019, the USPS issued a sheet of 10 Forever stamps commemorating the murals.
