Mary Burke (consort)
Lady Mary Burke (1560 – 1627) was an Irish noblewoman and consort of Brian O'Rourke. Life Lady Mary Burke was born around 1560, the daughter of Richard Burke, 2nd Earl of Clanricarde and Margaret O'Brien, daughter of Murrough O'Brien, 1st Earl of Thomond. She was also known as Lady Mary Ny Vryen or Lady Mary Ní Bhriain, after her mother. She married Brian O'Rourke around 1575 or 1576. Burke was an ardent supporter of Queen Elizabeth I, and left her husband shortly after the birth of her son Teigue due to her husband's rebellious activities. The couple had two other sons, Art and Eogan. After the separation, she wished to marry John Fitzgerald, the brother of James FitzGerald, 14th Earl of Desmond, but he was killed in 1582. Brian O'Rourke
Sir Brian O'Rourke ( ga, Sir Brian na Múrtha Ó Ruairc; c. 1540 – 1591) was first king and then lord of West Breifne in Ireland from 1566 until his execution in 1591. He reigned during the later stages of the Tudor conquest of Ireland and his rule was marked by English encroachments on his lands. Despite being knighted by the English in 1585, he would later be proclaimed a rebel and forced to flee his kingdom in 1590. He travelled to Scotland in early 1591 seeking assistance from King James VI, however, he was to become the first man extradited within Britain on allegations of crimes committed in Ireland and was sentenced to death in London in November 1591. Richard Burke, 2nd Earl of Clanricarde (; ; died 24 July 1582) was an Irish noble who succeeded his father Ulick na gCeann Burke, 1st Earl of Clanricarde as chief of a Gaelicised Norman family with authority over much of what is now County Galway. Richard's nickname was "Englishman", because he took the English part during the Tudor reconquest of Ireland. Richard's mother, Grace O'Carroll, was one of several putative wives of Ulick , such that there were rival candidates to succeed to the Earldom. Richard, the oldest legitimate son in English law, was the eventual successor. He was sporadically opposed by his brothers and half-brothers, including John, whose mother was of Maire Lynch, and who claimed the title in 1568. Murrough O'Brien, 1st Earl of Thomond ( ga, Murchadh Carrach Ó Briain) (died 7 November 1551) was the last King of Thomond, and a descendant of the High King of Ireland, Brian Boru. Biography Murrough was a lineal descendant of Brian Boru, High King of Ireland, was the third or fourth son of Turlough O'Brien, Lord of Thomond (d. 1528), and Raghnailt, daughter of John MacNamara. On the death of his brother, Conor O'Brien, in 1539, he succeeded by custom of tanistry to the lordship of Thomond and the chieftainship of the Dal Cais. Teigue O'Rourke ( ga, Tadhg Ó Ruairc) (1576–1605) was the last king of West Breifne from 1603 until his death in 1605. He was the son of Brian O'Rourke and Mary Burke (consort), Mary Burke of Clanricarde. Raised by his mother in County Galway, he lived most of his life in exile from his kingdom, looking for allies to support his claim as king of West Breifne in opposition to his half-brother Brian Oge O'Rourke. Having initially supported the Irish alliance during the Nine Years' War (Ireland), Nine Years' War, he switched allegiance to England following the Battle of Kinsale in 1602. With the support of English forces he invaded West Breifne in 1603, ousting his half-brother and ruling as king until his unexpected death in late 1605 at the age of 28. James FitzMaurice FitzGerald
James fitz Maurice FitzGerald (died 1579), called "fitz Maurice", was captain-general of Desmond while Gerald FitzGerald, 14th Earl of Desmond, was detained in England by Queen Elizabeth after the Battle of Affane in 1565. He led the first Desmond Rebellion in 1569 and was sometimes called the "Archtraitor" by the English. He surrendered in 1573, prostrating himself in Kilmallock church before John Perrot, president of Munster. In 1575, when the earl returned to Ireland, fitz Maurice went into exile on the continent. In July 1579 he invaded Ireland with a small force, landing at Dingle and then sailing around the tip of the Dingle peninsula into Smerwick Bay and occupying Dún an Óir (Fort of Gold).
