Mary Anderson (later Mary Anderson de Navarro; July 28, 1859 – May 29, 1940) was an American theatre actress. Early life Mary Antoinette Anderson was the daughter of Charles Henry Anderson, an Oxford-educated New Yorker, and his wife, Antonia Leugers; the latter had been disowned by her Philadelphia Catholic family after the couple had eloped to California. Mary was born in Sacramento, California. Shortly after her birth, her parents moved to Louisville, Kentucky, where her father enlisted in the Confederate States Army in the American Civil War. He was killed in action at Mobile when she was three. Mary was educated at the Ursuline convent and the all-girl Presentation Academy in Louisville. She was an unenthusiastic pupil except for an interest in reading and acting Shakespeare. She also took private lessons in music, dancing and literature. Mary Anderson (August 27, 1872 – 1964) was a Swedish-born American labor activist and an advocate for women in the workplace. A true feminist, she rallied support to ratify many new laws to support women and equal rights. Throughout her lifetime, Anderson held a large range of roles, rising from a factory worker to the Director of the Women's Bureau in the United States Department of Labor. Anderson's work to protect the rights of women in the workplace made no small impact on the lives of working women across the country. Mary Anderson was a luxury yacht built in 1933. It was the official yacht of the governor of Bengal and later the President of Bangladesh. More recently, it was converted into a floating restaurant before burning down in 2014. History Mary Anderson was built in 1933 by the Calcutta Shipyard. It was named after the daughter of John Anderson, 1st Viscount Waverley, then the governor of Bengal. It was built at a cost of Rs 1,24,702.00 for the Governor of Bengal. After the partition of India in 1947, the yacht became the official yacht of the Governor of East Bengal. Following the Independence of Bangladesh in 1971, the yacht became the official yacht of the President of Bangladesh. Mary Anderson Bain (September 19, 1911 – August 7, 2006) was a New Deal politician best known for her 33 years of service as Chief of Staff for Representative Sidney R. Yates, of Illinois. Bain was born in DeKalb, where she was involved in Democratic politics. In 1935 she became the director of the National Youth Administration, one of Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal agencies, for the Northern Illinois District. By 1939 she was director of NYA for all of Illinois. Later she was Deputy Director of the Illinois War Manpower Commission, roving Midwest executive for the Office of Price Administration, and Illinois Director for the U.S. Employment Service. In 1937 she married a reporter named Herbert Bain, who was an editor of the old ''Chicago Herald-American'' before becoming a public relations executive in Chicago and Washington. Mary A. Anderson is the pseudonym that was used by an unknown woman who committed suicide in a Seattle, Washington hotel room in October 1996. Investigations by multiple agencies have failed to identify her. Death and discovery of the body On October 9, the woman reserved a room by telephone at the Hotel Vintage Park, 1100 5th Avenue, about 90 minutes before checking in. She arrived with two bags and paid cash for two nights. In the hotel's register, she entered the name "Mary A. Anderson," along with a New York City address and a telephone number, all of which investigators later determined to be false. On October 11, her body was discovered by hotel staff after she failed to check out. She was found reclining in the bed, clasping a Bible to her chest with the pages open to Psalm 23. Mary Gertrude Anderson ( ''née'' Gaiser; December 7, 1909 – March 27, 2017) was an American business executive, known for co-founding REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) in 1938 with her husband, Lloyd Anderson. As avid mountaineers in Seattle, Washington, they saw a need for quality gear so created a consumer cooperative company that is one of the largest recreational equipment retailers. They were inducted into the Cooperative Business Association's Hall of Fame in 1993. Brigadier Dame Mary Mackenzie Pihl ( Anderson; 3 February 1916 – 18 June 2006) was a British Army officer. Having served in the Auxiliary Territorial Service during the Second World War, she then rose through the ranks of the Women's Royal Army Corps (WRAC) and served as director of WRAC from 1967 to 1970. Mary Désirée Anderson (1902–1973) was a British specialist in Christian iconography and early Church drama, as well as a leading expert on English medieval woodcarving. She was a poet in her own right. Photographs contributed by Maisie Anderson to the Conway Library are currently being digitised by the Courtauld Institute of Art, as part of the Courtauld Connects project. She published under the name M. D. Anderson.
