Marvel Loch Gold Mine
The Marvel Loch Gold Mine is a gold mine located at Marvel Loch, south of Southern Cross, Western Australia. It is operated by St Barbara Limited. Apart from Marvel Loch, St Barbara also operated the Gwalia Gold Mine at Leonora and owned the Tarmoola Gold Mine, which was placed in care and maintenance. All three mines were previously owned by the now defunct mining company Sons of Gwalia Limited. Sons of Gwalia went into administration on 30 August 2004 and the company's gold mining operations were sold to St Barbara in March 2005 for A$38 million, having been valued by the Sons of Gwalia directors at A$120 million. While Marvel Loch was operational before and after the sale, the Gwalia mine was already placed in care and maintenance at the time of the transaction. Marvel Loch, Western Australia
Marvel Loch is a small townsite of fewer than 100 people, east of Perth, Western Australia. It is located south west of Southern Cross, along the Perth to Kalgoorlie Great Eastern Highway. The town is located in the Shire of Yilgarn. Gold was discovered in the area in the early 1890s. In 1906 following gold mining leases being issued to Markham, Doolette, Leneberg and Le Breton, who named their lease Marvel Loch. The town is named after the horse that won the Caulfield Cup in 1905. The town lies between the mine and another minesite, and the current location was surveyed in 1909 and the town was gazetted in 1911. The Marvel Loch Progress Association was formed in 1909 to help get a School established in the area, which was built by the Association in around 1910 out of Lime Wash Hession Walls with Bush Poles and an Iron Roof. Carosue Dam Gold Mine
The Carosue Dam Gold Mine is a gold mine located south of Laverton, Western Australia. Carosue Dam was previously owned by the now defunct mining company Sons of Gwalia Limited. Purchased in 2005, the mine was placed into care and maintenance by new owners St Barbara in June 2005 and sold to Saracen Mineral Holdings in February 2006. Saracen reopened the mine in early 2010. It is now owned and operated by Northern Star Resources after a merger with Saracen in 2021. Yilgarn Star Gold Mine
The Yilgarn Craton is a large craton that constitutes the bulk of the Western Australian land mass. It is bounded by a mixture of sedimentary basins and Proterozoic fold and thrust belts. Zircon grains in the Jack Hills, Narryer Terrane have been dated at ~4.27 Ga, with one detrital zircon dated as old as 4.4 Ga. The Murchison Province of the craton contains the oldest dated meteorite impact crater, at 2229 ± 5 Ma. Geology The Yilgarn Craton appears to have been assembled between ~2.94 and 2.63 Ga by the accretion of a multitude of formerly present blocks or terranes of existing continental crust, most of which formed between 3.2 Ga and 2.8 Ga.
