Flying Ace
A flying ace, fighter ace or air ace is a military aviator credited with shooting down five or more enemy aircraft during aerial combat. The exact number of aerial victories required to officially qualify as an ace is varied, but is usually considered to be five or more. The concept of the "ace" emerged in 1915 during World War I, at the same time as aerial dogfighting. It was a propaganda term intended to provide the home front with a cult of the hero in what was otherwise a war of attrition. The individual actions of aces were widely reported and the image was disseminated of the ace as a chivalrous knight reminiscent of a bygone era. André Marty (6 November 1886 – 23 November 1956) was a leading figure in the French Communist Party (PCF) for nearly thirty years. He was also a member of the National Assembly, with some interruptions, from 1924 to 1955; Secretary of Comintern from 1935 to 1943; and Political Commissar of the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War from 1936 to 1938. Early years Marty was born in Perpignan, France, into a left-leaning but comfortable family; his father was a wine merchant. As a youngster, Marty tried to win a place in open competition for the prestigious École Navale, the French naval academy, but failed and instead became apprenticed to a boiler maker. He later joined the French navy, becoming a mechanical engineering officer aboard the battleship ''Jean Bart''. Martin Anton Maurus Marty (; 18 October 18471 October 1914) was a Swiss-born Austrian philosopher and Catholic priest. He specialized in philosophy of language, philosophy of psychology and ontology. Biography Marty was a student and follower of Franz Brentano, his teacher at the University of Würzburg in 1868–70. He was ordained in 1870, but resigned from the priesthood in 1872. He taught at the Franz-Josephs-Universität Czernowitz (Austria-Hungary) from 1875 to 1880 and after that at the University of Prague (Austria-Hungary), where from 1895 to 1897 he was twice rector. John J. Marty (born November 1, 1956) is a member of the Minnesota Senate, representing District 40, which includes parts of Ramsey County in the northern Twin Cities metropolitan area. Merlin J. "Mickey" Marty (February 24, 1922 – March 8, 2013) was an American basketball player. He played college basketball at Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, where in 1948 he was an NCAA Men's Basketball All-Americans, All-American. Marty played prep basketball at Loras Academy and in 1939 led the team to the Iowa Catholic School championship. He enrolled at hometown Loras College and played the 1940–41 season for the Duhawks. His college experience was interrupted as he served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He would then re-enroll at Loras for the 1945–46 season after a three-year absence.
