''Martine'' is a 1961 Australian television play directed by Christopher Muir in Melbourne. It was based on a play by Jean-Jacques Bernard. Plot In France, a young peasant girl Martine is secretly in love with Julien, a sophisticated man, even though he has a wife Joanne, who Madame Mervan arranged for him to marry. Alfred courts Martine but she rejects him. Walter John Cherry ( 10 May 1932 – 7 March 1986) was an Australian academic, drama scholar and theatre director, producer and manager Biography Cherry was born in Ballarat, Victoria to Victorian parents Walter Joseph Cherry, a commercial artist and Vera White. He attended St. Patricks College, Geelong and Geelong High School, before entering the University of Melbourne and obtaining a Bacholar of the Arts. As the founder and director of the Emerald Hill Theatre Company in Melbourne, Victoria, Cherry gained a reputation in the early 1960s for innovative programming and bold productions, particularly of Australian plays. Christopher Muir
} Christopher Muir (1931 - 2022) was an Australian director and producer, notable for his work in TV in the 1950s and 1960s. In the 1980s he was head of ABC Television drama. Biography Most of his early childhood was spent in France, but he returned to Melbourne upon the outbreak of World War II. He joined the ABC in 1949 at the recommendation of his headmaster upon completing his schooling at Melbourne Grammar School. Initially working as a messenger boy, he soon became a general trainee, and by 1954 he was a radio announcer. In 1955 the ABC seconded him to Paris to study television. He returned to Melbourne for the inauguration of ABC television in 1956. The ensuing decade saw him become a pioneer of television drama and music productions, often screened live-to-air during prime time on the ABC. Jean-Jacques Bernard
Jean-Jacques Bernard (30 July 1888 – 14 September 1972) was a French playwright and the chief representative of what became known as ''l’école du silence'' or, as some critics called it, the ''art of the unexpressed'', in which the dialogue does not express the characters’ real attitudes. In ''Martine'' (1922), perhaps the best example of his work, emotions are implied in gestures, facial expressions, fragments of speech and silence. He was active from 1912 to 1939. Bernard was born in Enghien-les-Bains, Val-d'Oise, the son of the dramatist Tristan Bernard. As a Jew, he was interned for a period of months starting in December 1941 in Compiègne, at a camp where 50,000 Jews were deported to concentration camps. Fred Parslow
Frederick Henry Parslow (14 August 1932 – 26 January 2017) was an Australian actor, who appeared in film, television and theatre. Acting career Parslow was notable in several film and TV roles, with parts in internationally successful TV soap opera's ''The Sullivans'' and ''Neighbours'' and was active in theatre, having served as a member of the Melbourne Theatre Company for nearly thirty years, joining the company when it was founded in 1953, known then the Union Theatre Repertory Company, and making his first performance with in a touring production of ''Twelfth Night'' Whilst a dominant figure on the Melbourne theatre scene, Parslow was generally reluctant to take on television roles. He made television appearances in the 1960s, in comedy and variety sketches with theatre colleagues on ''The Ray Taylor Show'' and ''In Melbourne Tonight''. Annette Andre (born 24 June 1939) is an Australian actress best known for her work on British television throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Early life and early career The daughter of an upholsterer, Annette Andre was born in Drummoyne, Australia, as Annette Christine Andreallo. She was brought up in Sydney and educated at Brigidine College, Sydney. She began work as a ballet dancer at the age of 4 at an academy linked to the Australian Ballet. At 15, she decided to stop ballet and pursue acting because she realised that she was not yet 16, the legal age to work in acting. Andre enrolled in a radio training school and her first radio role was in the serial radio drama called ''Kid Grayson Rides the Range''. Her first role was in the television movie '' If It's a Rose''. Her other Australian television performances included ''Slaughter of St Teresa's Day''.
