Martin Weiss (born December 31, 1962, in Innsbruck, Austria) is an Austrian career diplomat who served as Ambassador of Austria to the United States from 2019 to 2022. He is currently the president and chief executive officer of Salzburg Global Seminar, an independent nongovernmental organization based in Salzburg, Austria and Washington, D.C. He previously served as Austrian Ambassador to Israel and Cyprus. Life and career Martin Weiss grew up in Salzburg, Austria, and studied law at the Faculty of Law of the University of Vienna. After graduating in 1986, he worked as teaching assistant for constitutional law at his ''alma mater'' until 1988. He then spent one year at the University of Virginia School of Law on a Fulbright stipend, acquiring a Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree in 1989. Martin Weiss (21 February 1903 – 30 September 1984) was a Nazi official and ''de facto'' commander of the Vilna Ghetto and a Holocaust perpetrator. He was also the commander of the notorious Nazi-sponsored ''Ypatingasis būrys'' killing squad, which was largely responsible for the Ponary massacre where approximately 100,000 people were shot. Early life and military service He was born to a well-to-do Protestant family in Karlsruhe. Weiss followed his father's steps and received education in plumbing and heating installation. He was an apprentice in his father's shop. From 1923–1927 Weiss lived in South America, helping his brother to establish a farm. After his father's death in 1928, Weiss took over the family business. Martin Gottfried Weiss, alternatively spelled Weiß ( – 29 May 1946), was the commandant of the Dachau concentration camp in 1945 at the time of his arrest. He also served from April 1940 until September 1942 as the commandant of Neuengamme concentration camp, and later, from November 1943 until May 1944, as the fourth commandant of Majdanek concentration camp. He was executed for war crimes. Life Weiss was born in Weiden in der Oberpfalz. His father worked for the Royal Bavarian State Railways. He had two sisters and was raised as a Catholic. After school he continued his education at a mechanical engineering school in Landshut. He finished school in 1924 and worked as intern in an ironworks.
