Martin Vengadesan
Martin Vengadesan (born 3 May 1973) is a Malaysian writer, musician and former editor. He was news editor at The Star (Malaysia), The Star and associate editor at news portal ''Malaysiakini.'' He then moved to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission, simultaneously taking up a strategic communications role with Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil. He has written three books and recorded five albums. He was also a trade union leader and founding member of Malaysia’s ruling party Parti Keadilan Rakyat. Early life and education Vengadesan was born in Helsinki, Finland in 1973, the son of former diplomat Ambassador Dato’ Ramanathan Vengadesan. He grew up in nine countries across four continents including the USSR, Japan, Laos, Belgium, Thailand, Mali, Senegal and the USA. Kassim Ahmad
Kassim Ahmad (9 September 1933 – 10 October 2017) was a Malaysian Muslim philosopher, intellectual, writer, poet and an educator. He was also a socialist politician in the early days of Federation of Malaya, Malaya and later Malaysia and was detained without trial from 1976 to 1981 under Malaysia's Internal Security Act of Malaysia, Internal Security Act. Early life Kassim was born in Bukit Pinang, Kota Setar in the northern Malaysian state of Kedah in 1933. His parents were Ahmad Ishaq and Ummi Kalthom Ahmad. One of them originated from Pattani, Thailand, Pattani, Thailand. Kassim's grandfather was a farmer and a religious teacher who lived in Perai, Penang. Ravi Shankar
Ravi Shankar (; born Robindro Shaunkor Chowdhury, sometimes spelled as Rabindra Shankar Chowdhury; 7 April 1920 – 11 December 2012) was an Indian sitar, sitarist and composer. A sitar virtuoso, he became the world's best-known expert of Hindustani classical music, Indian classical music in the second half of the 20th century, and influenced many musicians in India and throughout the world. Peter Edward "Ginger" Baker (19 August 1939 – 6 October 2019) was an English drummer. His work in the 1960s and 1970s earned him the reputation of "rock's first superstar drummer", for a style that melded jazz and Music of Africa, African rhythms and pioneered both jazz fusion and world music. Baker gained early fame as a member of Blues Incorporated and the Graham Bond Organisation, both times alongside bassist Jack Bruce, with whom Baker would often clash. New Straits Times
The ''New Straits Times'' is an English-language newspaper published in Malaysia. It is Malaysia's oldest newspaper still in print (though not the first), having been founded as a local offshoot of Singapore-based ''The Straits Times'' on 15 July 1845. It was renamed as the ''New Straits Times'' on 13 August 1974. Arutchelvan Subramaniam
Arutchelvan s/o Subramaniam (29 June 1967) is the deputy chairman of Parti Sosialis Malaysia. Better known as Arul, he contested on four occasions in the Selangor state assembly elections, losing in Semenyih in 2008, 2013 and 2018 before being defeated in Kajang in 2023. A prominent figure in the human rights struggle and grassroots activism, he has claimed to have been arrested by the Malaysian police on more than 40 occasions. Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj
Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj (Tamil: மைக்கல் ஜெயகுமார்) (born 28 March 1955) is a Malaysian politician who is currently the chairperson of Socialist Party of Malaysia. He served in the Parliament of Malaysia as Member of Parliament for the Sungai Siput constituency in Perak from 2008 to 2018. While a prominent member of the Socialist Party of Malaysia (PSM) he was elected to Parliament on the ticket of the People's Justice Party (PKR) in the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) opposition coalition.
