Martin Naughton (hurler)
Martin Naughton (born 1964) is a former Irish sportsperson. He played senior hurling with his local club Turloughmore and with the Galway senior inter-county team in the 1980s and 1990s. Early life Martin Naughton was born in Turloughmore, County Galway in 1964. He was educated locally at Cregmore national school where he was first introduced to the game of hurling. Naughton later attended the Presentation College in Athenry where he won a county school's medal. He later worked in the marketing department of a local oil company. Playing career Club Naughton played his club hurling with his local Turloughmore club and enjoyed much success. He won a county minor title in the early 1980s before later joining the county senior side. Naughton won his sole senior county title in 1985. This was later converted into a Connacht club title. Turloughmore GAA is a Gaelic Athletic Association club based in the village of Turloughmore, County Galway, Ireland. The club is primarily concerned with the game of hurling. Overview History Hurling had been played in the parish of Lackagh long before the establishment of the Gaelic Athletic Association in 1884. The formation of the Irish National League in 1882 as a follow-up to the Land League, resulted in the setting up of a branch of the Gaelic Athletic Association being formed in the parish on 14 May 1886, which led to organised hurling games under proper rules. The GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship, known simply as the All-Ireland Championship, is an annual inter-county hurling competition organised by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA). It is the highest inter-county hurling competition in Ireland, and has been contested every year except one since 1887. The final, currently held on the third Sunday in August, is the culmination of a series of games played during July and August, with the winning team receiving the Liam MacCarthy Cup. National Hurling League
The National Hurling League is an annual Inter county, inter-county hurling competition featuring teams from Ireland and England. Founded in 1925 by the Gaelic Athletic Association, it operates on a system of promotion and relegation within the league system. The league has 35 teams divided into six divisions, with either five or six teams in each division. Promotion and relegation between these divisions is a central feature of the league. Although primarily a competition for Irish teams, teams from England – currently Lancashire GAA, Lancashire, London GAA, London and Warwickshire GAA, Warwickshire – also take part, while in the past New York GAA, New York also fielded a team for the latter stages of the league. Connacht ( ; ga, Connachta or ), is one of the provinces of Ireland, in the west of Ireland. Until the ninth century it consisted of several independent major Gaelic kingdoms (Uí Fiachrach, Uí Briúin, Uí Maine, Conmhaícne, and Delbhna). The Galway Senior Hurling Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Brooks Galway Senior Hurling Championship) is an annual hurling competition organised by the Galway County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1887 for the top hurling teams in the county of Galway in Ireland.
