British Birds Rarities Committee
The British Birds Rarities Committee (BBRC), established in 1959, is the national bird rarities committee for Britain. It assesses claimed sightings of bird species that are rarely seen in Britain, based on descriptions, photographs and video recordings submitted by observers. Its findings are published in an annual report in the journal ''British Birds (magazine), British Birds''. The BBRC covers around 280 species whose annually recorded sightings in Britain fall below a threshold deemed to signify rarity. Since the establishment of the committee, some previously included species have become more common—or at least better recorded; this has resulted in their removal from the committee's list and their reclassification as "scarce migrants". The committee has a chairman, a secretary, and ten voting members, and is supported by others who serve in an advisory capacity. Yellow-legged Gull
The yellow-legged gull (''Larus michahellis'') is a large gull found in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, which has only recently achieved wide recognition as a distinct species. It was formerly treated as a subspecies of either the Caspian gull ''L. cachinnans'', or more broadly as a subspecies of the herring gull ''L. argentatus''. The genus name is from Latin ''Larus'' which appears to have referred to a gull or other large seabird, and the species name honours the German zoologist Karl Michahelles. Classification It is now generally accepted that the yellow-legged gull is a full species, but until recently there was much disagreement. For example, '' British Birds'' magazine split the yellow-legged gull from the herring gull in 1993 but included the Caspian gull in the former, but the BOU in Great Britain retained the yellow-legged gull as a subspecies of the herring gull until 2007. David Quinn (bird Artist)
David Quinn (born 1959) is a British bird artist. He won the 1987 Bird Illustrator of the Year Award of '' British Birds'' magazine. His illustrations have appeared in several works, including the ''New World Warblers'' and ''Tits, Nuthatches & Treecreepers'' volumes of the Helm Identification Guides series, as well as accompanying identification papers in ''British Birds'' magazine. David Quinn is based in Cheshire, where he moved to in 1983. He attended Salford Grammar School, then Manchester Polytechnic, where he graduated with a BA with first class honours in graphic design in 1982. Amongst other publications in which his illustrations are featured is the third edition of the ''National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America'', as well as the ''Helm Identification Guide to New World Warblers''. Michael John Rogers
Michael ('Mike') John Rogers (5 October 1932 – 10 October 2006) was an English ornithologist and Honorary Secretary to the British Birds Rarities Committee. Born in Sutton Coldfield (then in Warwickshire), England, the only child of the head brewer at Ansells Brewery, Birmingham, he attended King Edward's School, Birmingham. He joined the West Midland Bird Club as a Junior Member in 1946 and quickly established himself as one of the region's keenest birders. He spent his National Service in the Army Intelligence Corps. In 1958 he joined the Metropolitan Police. In 1981, he retired as a Detective Sergeant, from the force and a few years later moved firstly to the Isles of Scilly and then, in 1987, to Cornwall. He suffered a mild stroke in 1991. In 1978 he became the Sussex Ornithological Society's bird recorder.
