Martin Elliott Sowden
Martin Elliott "Sam" Sowden (January 21, 1887 – February 10, 1962) was a Canadian banker and politician. He was born in Ontario but moved to North Vancouver in 1927 where he worked at the Canadian Bank of Commerce at 92 Lonsdale, becoming the manager in 1929. When the District of North Vancouver was in receivership, he was appointed as the Commissioner from 1945-1951. He then served as the Reeve (Mayor) of the District of North Vancouver in 1951 and 1952. North Vancouver (provincial Electoral District)
North Vancouver was a provincial electoral district in the Canadian province of British Columbia. It first appeared on the hustings in 1916 and at the time of its creation included West Vancouver as well as North Vancouver. Prior to its creation the North Shore had been part of the Vancouver riding.. The North Vancouver riding last appeared in the election of 1963, after which it was partitioned into North Vancouver-Capilano, North Vancouver-Seymour, and West Vancouver-Howe Sound. The Canadian Bank of Commerce was a Canadian bank which was founded in 1867, and had hundreds of branches throughout Canada. It merged in 1961 with the Imperial Bank of Canada to form the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce.
