Martin County, IN
Martin County is a county in the U.S. state of Indiana. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 10,327. The county seat is Shoals at the center of the county, and the county's only incorporated city is Loogootee, on the county's western border. History The Indiana Territory achieved statehood near the end of 1816. Shortly thereafter, the new State legislature created Dubois (December 1817) and Daviess (February 1818) counties. Due to the inflow of settlers into southwest Indiana, and the difficulty of accessing the county seats of those counties, Martin County was partitioned off from parts of those counties, being authorized on 20 January 1820. It was named for Maj. John T. Martin of Newport, Kentucky. Cale, Indiana
Cale is an unincorporated community in Mitcheltree Township, Martin County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. History The community was originally named New Cale, and was located approximately one mile north of its present-day location. When John Walsh built a railroad through the area in the 1870s, some people moved from the original settlement to the new location to be closer to the railway. The two settlements became known as New Cale and Old Cale. By the mid-1880s the population had increased considerably and the new location became known simply as Cale by 1889. A post office called Cale was established in 1884, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1908. The name Cale likely takes its name from a former school, Kale School, which in turn was named for a local resident. Burns City is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in Perry Township, Martin County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 114 at the 2020 census. History The town was founded as "Keck's Church" in 1849 by Christian Keck, an early settler. It became known as "Kecksville" ''circa'' 1852. The name was officially changed to Burns City on September 15, 1890. The present name was applied by a railroad engineer whose wife's maiden name was Burns. A post office was established under the name "Keck's Church" in 1849, was renamed Burns City in 1890, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1957. Crane is a town in Perry Township, Martin County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 184 at the 2010 census. The community is adjacent to the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division. History Crane was originally known as Burns City Ammunition Depot, and under the latter name was founded in 1940. In 1943, the community was renamed Crane, in honor of William M. Crane, first chief of the Navy Bureau of Ordnance. Geography Crane is located at (38.892703, -86.901294). Running for about in a general northwest-southeast direction, connecting U.S. Route 50 (US 50) and a USG Corporation plant. The highway is entirely within Martin County and its eastern end is located at the plant's entrance. SR 650 was originally introduced in the mid-1950s. Route description SR 650 begins at a four-way intersection with US 50. North of the intersection, the road becomes the main entrance to Martin State Forest. SR 650 heads south from the intersection but curves shortly afterward to head east-southeast. The road passes through wooded areas and over a CSX railroad track. After crossing a tributary of the White River, the road ends at the entrance to the USG plant. SR 650 is an undivided two-lane road for its entire length.
