Martin Cohen (soccer)
Martin Cohen (born 3 February 1952) is a South African former professional association footballer who played for the Los Angeles Aztecs. Playing career Cohen was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and is Jewish. He was a starter for Highlands Park during the apartheid era of soccer in South Africa. He had trained with this club since the age of 10. On 20 April 1974, Cohen was part of the White XI that played their black counterparts in a racially charged match at Rand Stadium. After initially going down 1-0 to the black side (the goal was called off-side by referee Wally Turner), Cohen scored a crucial goal before Neil Roberts put the game away. In 1975, Cohen won the South Africa's player of the year. In December 1976 he signed with the Los Angeles Aztecs. He scored his first two goals in the first leg of the second round of the NASL playoffs against the Dallas Tornado as the Aztecs won 3-1. He played with the California Surf in 1979. Martin Cohen (born 1964) is a British philosopher, an editor and reviewer who writes on philosophy, philosophy of science and political philosophy. Biography He studied philosophy and social science at Sussex University where his tutors included some of the early group of philosophers who launched the university's pioneering language and values programme, including Terry Diffey and Bernard Harrison. He obtained a teaching qualification at Keele University and his PhD in philosophy of education from the University of Exeter. After research posts at universities in Britain and Australia, Cohen moved to France to concentrate on his writing, which typically blend "psychological and social studies with philosophical theory ... eschewing technical jargon and using easily understood scenarios to demonstrate the theme". Martin Samuel Cohen is rabbi of the Shelter Rock Jewish Center in Roslyn, New York. Biography Cohen was educated at the City University of New York and at Jewish Theological Seminary of America, where he was ordained a rabbi and received his Ph.D. in ancient Judaism. His dissertation dealt with the early Jewish mystical work Shiur Komah. At that time he also studied the legal writings of Maimonides together with his friend Rabbi Dr. Zvi Leshem, currently the director of the Gershom Scholem Collection at the National Library of Israel. He has taught at Hunter College, at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, at the Institute for Jewish Studies of the University of Heidelberg, and at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver School of Theology.
