Martin A. Pedroza
Martin A. Pedroza (born July 20, 1965 in Panama City, Panama) is a jockey in American Thoroughbred horse racing. Pedroza trained at the Panama jockey school and in 1981 rode his first winner at Hipódromo Presidente Remón in Panama City. He emigrated to California for the 1983 racing season where he won more races than any other apprentice jockey during three meets at Santa Anita Park, Oak Tree and Los Alamitos. He is considered one of the best jockeys of all time. Jockey
A jockey is someone who rides horses in horse racing or steeplechase racing, primarily as a profession. The word also applies to camel riders in camel racing. The word "jockey" originated from England and was used to describe the individual who rode horses in racing. They must be light, typically around a weight of 100-120 lb., and physically fit. They are typically self-employed and are paid a small fee from the horse trainer and a percentage of the horse's winnings. Jockeys are mainly male, though there are some well-known female jockeys too. The job has a very high risk of debilitating or life-threatening injuries. Texas Mile Stakes
The Steve Sexton Mile Stakes is a Grade III American Thoroughbred horse race for horses three years old and older over the distance of one mile (8 furlongs on the dirt scheduled annually in late May at Lone Star Park in Grand Prairie, Texas. History The inaugural running of the event was on 20 April in 1997 as the Texas Mile Stakes and was won by Isitingood who was trained by the US Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert and owned by Michael E. Pegram & Terry Henn in a time of 1:34.44. The winning time continues to this day to be the stakes record. After being classified as a Listed event in 1999 it became the first graded Thoroughbred stakes race in Texas. The Cinema Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-old horses held annually at Santa Anita Park Arcadia, California. Raced on turf over a distance of one and one-eighth miles (9 furlongs) in late May or early June. History The event was inaugurated in 1946 at Hollywood Park Racetrack. The race was run in two divisions in 1961 and 1963. It was not run in 1974. In 1973 the event was given Grade II status. It held this classification until 1994. Haggin Stakes
The Haggin Stakes was an American Thoroughbred horse race run annually at Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, California. Raced in mid-June, it was open to two-year-old horses and was contested on dirt over a distance of five and one half furlongs. Inaugurated in 1940, there was no race in 1942 and 1943. After the 1982 running the event was put on hiatus until being revived in 1996. After fifty years in which it was raced, the Haggin Stakes was canceled in 2005 following a shortage of entrants. The El Camino Real Derby is a Listed American Thoroughbred horse race held in February at Golden Gate Fields in Albany, California. The race is open to three-year-olds willing to race one and one-eighth miles (9 furlongs) on Tapeta, a synthetic racing surface. Northern California's premier Kentucky Derby prep, the El Camino Real Derby was first run in 1982. It was hosted by Bay Meadows racetrack until its closing in August 2008. Hutcheson Stakes
The Hutcheson Stakes is an American Thoroughbred horse race held annually at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Florida. An event raced on dirt, it is open to three-year-old horses. Historical notes Inaugurated on March 31, 1954, the Hutcheson Stakes was named in honor of labor leader William Levi Hutcheson (1874–1953) who served as a member of the Gulfstream Park Advisory Board. It has been one of several prep races for the Grade 1 Florida Derby. Spectacular Bid captured the Hutcheson on his way to winning the 1979 Kentucky Derby as did Swale in 1984. Another notable winner of this race was Holy Bull who won the event in his first start of 1994 then went on to earn 1994 American Horse of the Year honors.
