Martha Glaser
Martha Farkas Glaser (February 15, 1921 – December 3, 2014) was the manager, producer, and business partner of jazz musician Erroll Garner. She was also a civil rights activist. Though she was best known for her role as Garner's manager, she was also a prolific writer of lyrics and poetry. Early life and education Glaser was born in Duquesne, Pennsylvania, to parents Samuel and Pearl Farkas, Hungarian immigrants who emigrated to the Pittsburgh area. She had a sister named Bella Rosenberg. Glaser graduated from Southwestern High School (Michigan), Southwestern High School in Detroit, Michigan, and then earned her bachelor's degree in government with minors in Economics, Sociology and History from Wayne State University in Detroit in 1942. Career After college Glaser worked for the Metropolitan Detroit Youth Council and as a compliance officer for the War Manpower Commission. Duquesne, Pennsylvania
Duquesne ( ) is a city along the Monongahela River in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, United States, within the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The population was 5,254 at the 2020 census. History The city of Duquesne was settled in 1789 and incorporated in 1891. The city derives its name from Fort Duquesne. Duquesne Works, a productive steel mill that was part of Carnegie Steel Corporation and later part of U.S. Steel, was the heart and soul of Duquesne during its brightest moments in the early 20th century. Duquesne was home to the largest blast furnace in the world, named the "Dorothy Six". Bob Dylan´s song '' Duquesne Whistle'' ( ''Tempest'', 2012) is dedicated to it. The city's population peaked in 1930, then declined with deindustrialization beginning in the 1960s. Today a stark post-industrial landscape, Duquesne has fewer total residents (5,565 at the 2010 U.S. census) than were the city's mill workers in 1948.
