Martha Elena Ruiz Sevilla is a Nicaraguan politician and lawyer who has served as Minister of Defence from 2013 to 2019. Early life and education Ruiz Sevilla is from Acoyapa. She has a Masters in Law from the Charles University in Prague. Career Ruiz Sevilla worked for the National Authority to the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources, before becoming Secretary General of the Ministry of Defence. Ruiz Sevilla was appointed Minister of Defence by President Daniel Ortega on 19 February 2013, becoming the first woman to hold the post. She was replaced by Rosa Adelina Barahona Castro on 19 August 2019. The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is an intergovernmental organisation and the implementing body for the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), which entered into force on 29 April 1997. The OPCW, with its 193 member states, has its seat in The Hague, Netherlands; it oversees the global endeavour for the permanent and verifiable elimination of chemical weapons. The organisation promotes and verifies the adherence to the Chemical Weapons Convention, which prohibits the use of chemical weapons and requires their destruction. Rosa Adelina Barahona Castro (born 10 May 1957) is a Nicaraguan psychologist and politician who has been the country's Minister of Defence since August 2019. Early life and education Barahona Castro was born in Murra, Nueva Segovia on 10 May 1957. She attended the NS Mixed School Center from 1965 until 1969, and then Immaculate Conception School, both in Ocotal. She has a degree in psychology from the Central American University in Managua. Career Barahona Castro was a founding member of the Sandinista Popular Army in 1979 and served as head of the Juana Elena Mondoza Women's Company in Esteli, as well as head of the Registration and Control section.
