Marston Hills, San Diego
Marston Hills is a neighborhood within the Hillcrest community of San Diego, California. It is located above the northwestern corner of Balboa Park, and is generally bounded by Sixth Avenue to the west, Pennsylvania Avenue to the north, and Park Boulevard to the east, although some sources give California State Route 163 as the western boundary. The neighborhood is named after George Marston, an early San Diego businessman and philanthropist, whose house and grounds are located in the area. The Marston Hills area is one of the older neighborhoods in San Diego, and has many large homes amid mature landscaping. The neighborhood has been proposed as a recognized historic district within the city of San Diego. The neighborhood was also the scene of one of San Diego's most infamous crimes: the murder of Dan Broderick by his ex-wife Betty Broderick. Hillcrest is a neighborhood in San Diego, California lying northwest of the Balboa Park neighborhood and south of the Mission Valley neighborhood. Hillcrest is known for its "tolerance and acceptance," its gender diversity, and locally owned businesses, including restaurants, cafés, bars, clubs, trendy thrift-stores, and other independent specialty stores. Hillcrest has a high population density compared to many other neighborhoods in San Diego, and it has a large and active lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and polyamorous community. Balboa Park, San Diego
Balboa Park is a historic urban cultural park in San Diego, California, United States. In addition to open space areas, natural vegetation zones, green belts, gardens, and walking paths, it contains museums, several theaters, and the San Diego Zoo. There are also many recreational facilities and several gift shops and restaurants within the boundaries of the park. Placed in reserve in 1835, the park's site is one of the oldest in the United States dedicated to public recreational use. George Marston (California Politician)
George White Marston (October 22, 1850 May 31, 1946) was an American politician, department store owner, and philanthropist. Marston was involved with establishing Balboa Park, the San Diego Public Library System, and San Diego Presidio Park. His contributions to San Diego earned him the affectionate title of "San Diego's First Citizen." Early life and career Marston was born in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin. As a boy, Marston learned to ice skate, which he continued to enjoy throughout his life. His father had a chronic respiratory ailment and wanted to live in a better climate for his health, so the family moved to San Diego in 1870. Marston was initially a clerk in the Horton House Hotel, then entered the mercantile business as a bookkeeper with the firm of Aaron Pauly & Sons general merchandise store and warehouse merchants. Elisabeth Anne Broderick (née Bisceglia; born November 7, 1947) is an American woman who was convicted of murdering her ex-husband, Daniel T. Broderick III, and his second wife, Linda (née Kolkena) Broderick, on November 5, 1989. At a second trial that began on December 11, 1991, she was convicted of two counts of second-degree murder and later sentenced to 32-years-to-life in prison.
