Marrakai, Northern Territory
__NOTOC__ Marrakai is a locality in the Northern Territory of Australia located about east of the territorial capital of Darwin. The locality consists of land bounded in part to the west by the Adelaide River, in part to the north by the coastline of Van Diemen Gulf and in part to the east by the Mary River. The locality was named after the Marrakai pastoral station whose name is considered to be an amalgamation of a local Aboriginal word "kie", meaning river, and a corruption of the English word "Mary", usually used as a woman's first name. Its boundaries and name were gazetted on 4 April 2007. Marrakai is located within the federal division of Lingiari, the territory electoral division of Goyder and the unincorporated areas of the Northern Territory. Division Of Lingiari
The Division of Lingiari is an Australian electoral division in the Northern Territory that covers the entirety of the territory outside of the Division of Solomon, which covers Darwin and surrounding areas. The division also includes the Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Lingiari includes all of the Northern Territory's remote Indigenous communities, most of whom vote when visited by mobile polling teams during the election campaign. The current MP is Marion Scrymgour, a member of the Australian Labor Party. Scrymgour herself is Indigenous and inherited Tiwi identity from her mother. Mary River (Northern Territory)
The Mary River flows in the Northern Territory of Australia and is a site of the Mary River National Park. Description The river is approximately long and rises about east of Pine Creek. The catchment area is over but is ephemeral and only flows in the wet season, during the dry it is a series of pools and billabongs. The catchment has several small reserve areas forming the Mary River National Park to help protect it. The Arnhem Highway crosses the river near one of the park areas. It also supports multiple land uses including pastoralism, fishing, mining, defence force, tourism, conservation and horticulture. Pastoralism, particularly cattle grazing is the dominant use taking up 63% of the catchment area. Van Diemen Gulf
Van Diemen Gulf is a gulf in the Northern Territory of Australia. It connects to the Timor Sea in the north via Dundas Strait. Most of its area is also gazetted as a locality with the name Van Diemen Gulf. History The gulf was named after the Dutch colonial governor, Anthony van Diemen (1593–1645). Phillip Parker King and his crew in the 76-tonne cutter surveyed the coastline in early 1818, encountering local Aboriginal people and proas sailed by Makassans, and passed by the Gulf on other voyages. Geography The gulf connects to the Timor Sea in the north via Dundas Strait, and is also connected to the Beagle Gulf in the west by the Clarence Strait. The Adelaide River is a river in the Northern Territory of Australia. Lake Bennett, Northern Territory
Lake Bennett is a small artificial freshwater lake located 80 km south of Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia within the Coomalie Shire. The lake is set in 4.45 square kilometres of tropical wilderness. It was created in 1980 following the construction of a dam by George and Ken Bennett on a property they had purchased the previous year. It has been stocked with barramundi since 2004. In recent times some sub-division of the lands around the lake foreshores has occurred with cabins and houses being built around the northern edge, although the permanent population is very small. These dwellings are largely used as "weekenders" or retreats. Resort Lake Bennett Wilderness resort was developed in the 1990s. Electoral Division Of Goyder
Goyder is an electoral division of the Legislative Assembly in Australia's Northern Territory. It was first created in 1990, and is named after George Goyder, the South Australian surveyor responsible for carrying out the first freehold surveys in the area. Goyder encompasses large rural areas south of Darwin, covering 9,770 km², and taking in the towns of Bees Creek, Cox Peninsula, Virginia, Marlows Lagoon and parts of Berry Springs and Humpty Doo. When first created, it was even larger extending south to Pine Creek and east to Jabiru and the whole of Kakadu National Park. There were 5,583 people enrolled in the electorate as of August 2020.
