Yapen Islands Regency
Yapen Islands Regency is a regency (''kabupaten'') in Papua Province of eastern Indonesia. It covers an area of , and had a population of 82,951 at the 2010 Census and 112,676 at the 2020 Census. The official estimate as at mid 2021 was 114,210. It comprises an archipelago which lies in Cenderawasih Bay off the north coast of Western New Guinea. Geography The regency includes the islands and island groups of the Yapen Islands archipelago, including the main Yapen island. Its capital is Serui (part of Yapen Selatan district). The area is seismically active. A magnitude 7.5 earthquake in 1979 caused serious destruction and a tsunami, killing 115 people. Administrative Districts The Yapen Islands Regency in 2010 comprised twelve districts (''distrik''); however, by 2018 four additional districts has been created (Anotaurei, Pulau Kurudu, Pulau Yerui and Yawakukat), bringing the total to sixteen, which are subdivided into 165 administrative "villages". Papua is a province of Indonesia, comprising the northern coast of Western New Guinea together with island groups in Cenderawasih Bay to the west. It roughly follows the borders of Papuan customary region of Tabi Saireri. It is bordered by the sovereign state of Papua New Guinea to the east, the Pacific Ocean to the north, Cenderawasih Bay to the west, and the provinces of Central Papua and Highland Papua to the south. Persatuan Sepakbola Waropen (commonly known as Persewar) is an Indonesian football club based in Waropen Regency, Papua, Indonesia. Persewar Waropen has several nickname, namely ''The Mangrove Pearl''. On 22 December 2018, they secured a promotion to Liga 2 from Liga 3. History Persewar Waropen was established in 2005, from the year the club was founded until 2009, Persewar Waropen played in the Liga Indonesia Third Division. Persewar won the Liga Indonesia Third Division in the 2009–2010 season.
