Dordogne (river)
The Dordogne (; oc, Dordonha) is a river in south-central and southwest France. It is long. The Dordogne and its watershed were designated Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO on July 11 2012. Geography The river rises on the flanks of the Puy de Sancy at above sea level in the mountains of Auvergne, from the confluence of two small torrents above the town of Le Mont-Dore: the ''Dore'' and the ''Dogne''. It flows generally west about through the Limousin and Périgord regions before flowing into the Gironde, its common estuary with the Garonne, at the Bec d'Ambès ("Ambès beak"), north of the city of Bordeaux. Nature The Dordogne is one of the few rivers in the world that exhibit the phenomenon of a tidal bore, known as a mascaret. The upper valley of the Dordogne is a series of deep gorges. Rivers Of France
This is a list of rivers that are at least partially in France. The rivers are grouped by sea or ocean. The rivers flowing into the sea are sorted along the coast. Rivers flowing into other rivers are listed by the rivers they flow into. Some rivers (e.g. SĂ»re/Sauer) do not flow through France themselves, but they are mentioned for having French tributaries. They are given in ''italics''. For clarity, only rivers that are longer than 50 km (or have longer tributaries) are shown. In French, rivers are traditionally classified either as ''fleuves'' when they flow into the sea (or into a desert or lake), or as ''rivières'' when they flow into another river. The ''fleuves'' are shown in bold. For an alphabetical overview of rivers of France, see the category Rivers of France. Tributary list North Sea The rivers in this section are sorted north-east (Netherlands) to south-west ( Calais). * Rhine/Rhin (main branch at Hook of Holland, Netherlands) ** Moselle (in Koblenz, Germ ...
