Marmion is a surname found in France, Great Britain and Ireland, of Norman-French origin. The origin of the surname itself is disputed. Family origin The noble Marmion family in Britain were Normans, who received English land after the Norman Conquest. Their earliest documented ancestor is William Marmion, who exchanged 12 acres of land with Ralf Taisson before Oct 1049 and witnessed a charter of William, Duke of Normandy in 1060. They retained their lands at Fontenay-le-Marmion in Normandy, but William's son Roger (died c. 1075) went to England. Roger was father of Robert Marmion, an ally of Robert Curthose who took part in the First Crusade, and he was apparently succeeded by Roger (died by 1129) and his son Robert Marmion (died 1144). Celine Marmion
Celine J. Marmion is a Professor of Chemistry at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and President of the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and the Institute of Chemistry of Ireland. Marmion is involved with the design of new chemotherapeutic drugs. Early life and education Marmion earned her doctoral degree at the University of Surrey in 1994. Her PhD research involved investigations into vanadium complexes and nitrogen fixation. In 1994 Marmion was appointed as a lecturer at St Mary's University, Twickenham, where she worked until 1995. She returned to study in 1995, and earned a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) at Kingston University. Simon Marmion
Simon Marmion (c. 1425 – 24 or 25 December 1489) was a French and Burgundian Early Netherlandish painter of panels and illuminated manuscripts. Marmion lived and worked in what is now France but for most of his lifetime was part of the Duchy of Burgundy in the Southern Netherlands. Life Like many painters of his era, Marmion came from a family of artists, and both his father, Jean, and his brother Mille were painters. Marmion is recorded as working at Amiens between 1449 and 1454, and then at Valenciennes from 1458 until his death. He was patronized by Philip the Good, the Duke of Burgundy from 1454 when he was one of several artists called to Lille to work on the decorations for the Feast of the Pheasant. Shackerley Marmion
Shackerley Marmion (January 1603 – 1639), also Shakerley, Shakerly, Schackerley, Marmyon, Marmyun, or Mermion, was an early 17th-century dramatist, often classed among the Sons of Ben, the followers of Ben Jonson who continued his style of comedy. He was also a friend and perhaps a protégé of Thomas Heywood. Background The playwright's father, Shackerley Marmion (son of a London lawyer and member of a junior line of the Marmion Barons of Tamworth), held the manor at Aynho in Northamptonshire but was habitually in debt; in time he would pass his debts on to his son. Philip Marmion, 5th Baron Marmion Of Tamworth
Philip Marmion, 5th and last Baron Marmion of Tamworth (died 1291) was King's Champion and Sheriff. He was descended from the lords of Fontenay-le-Marmion in Normandy, who are said to have been hereditary champions of the Dukes of Normandy. Career Philip was High Sheriff of Warwickshire and Leicestershire in 1249, and of Norfolk and Suffolk in 1261, having also been summoned to Parliament in that year. He served in Poitou in 1254, and was imprisoned when on his way home through France at Pons. Philip was one of the sureties for the king in December 1263 and was one of his leading supporters at the Battle of Northampton in April 1264. He was taken prisoner at the Battle of Lewes on 14 May 1264. He died before 5 December 1291 when an Inquisition post mortem was held. Sir Manser (aka Mauncer) Marmion, of Ringstone in Rippingale and Galby was an English Member of Parliament and Sheriff of Lincolnshire. Columba Marmion, OSB, born Joseph Aloysius Marmion (April 1, 1858 – January 30, 1923) was a Benedictine Irish monk and the third Abbot of Maredsous Abbey in Belgium. William Richard Marmion (born 22 May 1954) is an Australian politician who was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia between 2008 and 2021, representing the seat of Nedlands.
