West Market Square Historic District
The West Market Square Historic District encompasses one of Bangor, Maine's central urban business districts. Located at the junction of Main and Broad Streets, it has been a focal point of Bangor's economy and business since the city's incorporation in 1834. The district includes seven buildings reflective of its appearance in the late 19th and early 20th centuries; it was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Description and history When Bangor was incorporated in 1834, the junction of Main and Broad Streets, just west of Kenduskeag Stream, was already known as "Market Square", and was the site of an open-air market. Market Square Historic District (Houlton, Maine)
The Market Square Historic District of Houlton, Maine encompasses that town's historic late-19th century central business district. Centered on the junction of Market Square, Court Street, Water Street, and Main Street, it includes a relatively cohesive assortment of brick and masonry commercial buildings, designed by architects and built between 1885 and 1910, following the arrival of the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad. The district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Description and history Houlton was one of the first communities settled in southern Aroostook, and is still its most important economic center. The town was incorporated in 1831, but grew very slowly until 1870, when the New Brunswick Railway was extended westward into Maine. In 1893 the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad arrived in Houlton from the west, kicking of a commercial building boom. Market Square Historic District (Newburyport, Massachusetts)
The Market Square Historic District of Newburyport, Massachusetts encompasses an area of the city near the Merrimack River that was completely rebuilt after a major fire in 1811. Over the next twenty years the area was rebuilt under a building code requiring either brick construction or size limits on wood-frame buildings. As a consequence the Market Square area has a remarkable concentration of Federal style brick buildings. Among the most notable are the Custom House, now a museum, and the 1823 Market House, which forms the district's eastern boundary. The district includes Market Square and properties fronting on State, Merrimac, Liberty, and Water Streets. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971. Market Square is a public space located in Downtown Pittsburgh at the intersection of Forbes Avenue (originally named Diamond Way in colonial times) and Market Street. Market Square is a historic district and pedestrian mall located in downtown Knoxville, Tennessee, United States. Established in 1854 as a market place for regional farmers, the square has developed over the decades into a multipurpose venue that accommodates events ranging from concerts to political rallies, and has long provided a popular gathering place for artists, street musicians, war veterans, and activists. The district includes all of the blocks between Travis and Main from Texas Street to the northern boundary of University of Houstown-Downtown.
