Mark Stetson
Mark Stetson (born 1952) is a visual effects artist. He has worked on over 60 films since his start in 1979. He won at the 74th Academy Awards in the category of Best Visual Effects for his work on the film '' The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring''. He shared his Oscar with Randall William Cook, Jim Rygiel, and Richard Taylor. Special effects (often abbreviated as SFX, F/X or simply FX) are illusions or visual tricks used in the theatre, film, television, video game, amusement park and simulator industries to simulate the imagined events in a story or virtual world. Special effects are traditionally divided into the categories of mechanical effects and optical effects. With the emergence of digital film-making a distinction between special effects and visual effects has grown, with the latter referring to digital post-production and optical effects, while "special effects" refers to mechanical effects. The Academy Award for Best Visual Effects is an Academy Award given for the best achievement in visual effects. History of the award The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences first recognized the technical contributions of special effects to movies at its inaugural dinner in 1929, presenting a plaque for "Best Engineering Effects" to the first Best Picture Oscar winner, the World War I flying drama ''Wings''. ''The Fellowship of the Ring'' is the first of three volumes of the epic novel ''The Lord of the Rings'' by the English author J. R. R. Tolkien. Jim Rygiel (born February 17, 1955) is an American visual effects supervisor. He has worked on major feature films since 1984, including ''The Lord of the Rings'' movie trilogy (for which he won three consecutive Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects) and ''Godzilla''. He currently works at FuseFX visual effects studio. Early life Rygiel was born in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Rygiel attended St. Joseph Catholic High School in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee. In 1980, he received a Master of Fine Arts degree from Otis Parsons School of Design (now called Otis College of Art and Design). Sir Richard Leslie Taylor (born 8 February 1965) is the founder, creative director and head of New Zealand film prop and special effects company Wētā Workshop. Early life Taylor was born in Cheadle, Cheshire, England, on 8 February 1965, and emigrated as a child to New Zealand, where his family lived at Te Hihi, and later the Auckland suburb of Patumahoe. He was naturalised as a New Zealand citizen in 1974. Taylor studied at Wesley College, Paerata, and then became a graduate of the former Wellington Polytechnic.
