Mark Monaghan
Mark Monaghan is an Australian politician who serves as MP for the Australian Labor Party in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly for the electoral division of Electoral division of Fong Lim, Fong Lim as of 2020. He is currently the 14th Speaker of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly after being elected on 23 May 2022 following the appointment of the previous Speaker Ngaree Ah Kit to Fyles ministry, cabinet. Pre-politics Monaghan worked as a teacher prior to entering politics and has lived in the Northern Territory for over 20 years. He met his wife Michelle while working there and together they have three children. After teaching, Monaghan was attached to various roles, including being the General Manager of Engineers Australia. Northern Territory Legislative Assembly
The Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory is the unicameral legislature of the Northern Territory of Australia. The Legislative Assembly has 25 members, each elected in single-member electorates for four-year terms. The voting method for the Assembly is the full-preferential voting system, having previously been optional preferential voting. Elections are on the fourth Saturday in August of the fourth year after the previous election, but can be earlier in the event of a no confidence vote in the Government. The most recent election for the Legislative Assembly was the 2020 election held on 22 August 2020. The next election is scheduled for 24 August 2024. Persons who are qualified under the ''Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918'' to vote for a member for the Northern Territory in the House of Representatives are qualified to vote at an election for the Legislative Assembly. Territory Alliance is an Australian political party based in the Northern Territory. It was founded in 2019 by Terry Mills (Australian politician), Terry Mills, an incumbent member of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly and former Chief Minister of the Northern Territory. He had been elected as a member of the Country Liberal Party (CLP). In March 2020, two additional independent MLAs joined the party, Jeff Collins (Australian politician), Jeff Collins (independent, formerly Australian Labor Party) and Robyn Lambley (formerly CLP). Speaker Of The Northern Territory Legislative Assembly
The Speaker of the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly is the presiding officer in the Northern Territory Legislative Assembly. Though the office had existed since the creation of the Assembly in 1974, it was given greater legislative force when the roles and functions of the office were included in the federal Act that gave the Territory self-government in 1978. The Speaker's principal duty is to preside over the Assembly. The occupant of the Chair must maintain order in the House, uphold the Standing Orders (rules of procedure) and protect the rights of backbench members. The Speaker must be a member of the Assembly themselves, and is elected to the position by a ballot of the members of the Assembly. It is generally a partisan position, although both Speaker and Deputy Speaker were independents between 2001 and 2005.
