An excitatory synapse is a synapse in which an action potential in a presynaptic neuron increases the probability of an action potential occurring in a postsynaptic cell. Neurons form networks through which nerve impulses travel, each neuron often making numerous connections with other cells. These electrical signals may be excitatory or inhibitory, and, if the total of excitatory influences exceeds that of the inhibitory influences, the neuron will generate a new action potential at its axon hillock, thus transmitting the information to yet another cell. Beit Memorial Fellowships For Medical Research
The Beit Memorial Medical Fellowships were one of the most prestigious and competitive fellowships for post-doctoral or medical degree research in medicine in the United Kingdom. The Fellowships were founded in 1909 by Sir Otto Beit, a German-born British financier, philanthropist and art connoisseur, in memory of his brother Alfred Beit. Eric Gouaux
Eric Gouaux is an American biochemist and biophysicist who holds the Jennifer and Bernard Lacroute Term Chair at the Vollum Institute at the Oregon Health & Science University. Education Gouaux studied chemistry at Harvard University, from which he received both his B.A. in 1984 and his Ph.D. in 1989. He remained in Cambridge as a postdoctoral fellow, first at Harvard and then at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Academic career Gouaux joined the faculty of the University of Chicago in 1993. Three years later, he moved to Columbia University, where he became a full professor in 2001.
