Mark Grover
Mark Leroy Grover (born 1947) is an American expert on Mormonism in Brazil and an author on religion in Latin America. Biography Grover was born in Malad, Idaho and is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). He served as a Mormon missionary in Brazil. He has a Ph.D. in Brazilian History from Indiana University. Grover works as the subject area librarian for Latin America at the Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University. Writings Grover is the author of several books related to the LDS Church and Brazil and at times focusing more broadly on Latin America and religion in general. He has compiled multiple bibliographies related to the LDS Church in Latin America and Mexican-Americans in Utah.Ronald W. Bookcraft was a major publisher of books and products for members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). History In 1940, LDS Church president Heber J. Grant asked the church's ''Improvement Era'' magazine to compile his sermons into a book called ''Gospel Standards''. Compiler G. Homer Durham published it in 1941 as "An Improvement Era Publication", rather than through Deseret Book, the church's official book publisher. During production, Grant suggested that the magazine's staff should start a new LDS publishing company, separate from Deseret Book. In 1942, the ''Eras business manager, John Kenneth Orton, started Bookcraft as a private publishing house in Salt Lake City, Utah. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) (Portuguese: A Igreja de Jesus Cristo dos Santos dos Últimos Dias) was established in Brazil in 1926 with the opening of the South American Mission. Missionary work was focused on small German immigrant colonies in South Brazil. The LDS Church was forced to expand missionary work to Brazilians and Portuguese speakers when non-Portuguese languages were banned in public meetings in 1938. The Brazil Mission was opened on February 9, 1935, with Rulon S. Howells as mission president. The first Portuguese translation of the Book of Mormon was published in 1939. During Howells's second presidency in the early 1950s, he instituted programs to genealogically screen Brazilians interested in the LDS Church or its members in Brazil to prevent people with African ancestry from joining the church.
