Mark Galassi
Mark Galassi is a physicist, computer scientist, and contributor to the Free and open-source software movement. He was born in Manhattan, grew up in France and Italy, and lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Education Galassi studied at the Liceo Classico Giuseppe Parini, graduating in 1983. He completed his BA in physics at Reed College in 1986. He has credited various aspects of the college for launching his career, including learning to write software from fellow student Keith Packard and others who taught informal classes in the Reed College Paideia classes. He then completed his Ph.D. in physics in 1992 at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at Stony Brook under Martin Roček. Work and research Galassi works in the Space Science and Applications group at the Los Alamos National Laboratory as a research scientist. Martin Roček
Martin Roček is a professor of theoretical physics at the State University of New York at Stony Brook and a member of the C. N. Yang Institute for Theoretical Physics. He received A.B. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University in 1975 and 1979. He did post-doctoral research at the University of Cambridge and Caltech before becoming a professor at Stony Brook University. Free And Open-source Software Movement
The free software movement is a social movement with the goal of obtaining and guaranteeing certain freedoms for software users, namely the freedoms to run the software, to study the software, to modify the software, and to share copies of the software (whether modified or not). Software which meets these requirements, The Four Essential Freedoms of Free Software, is termed free software. Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory, previously called the Swift Gamma-Ray Burst Explorer, is a NASA three-telescope space observatory for studying gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and monitoring the afterglow in X-ray, and UV/Visible light at the location of a burst.
